Southern Utah

Not necessarily information about airstrips or airports, but more general info about a greater area or a route of flight.

Re: Southern Utah

Great advise by Shortfielder. Hidden Splendor is one of my favorites, awesome spot! Very deceptive though. Looks like it is downhill to the north. It is not!

Re: Southern Utah

I am completely unfamiliar with the strips. My ears are open for advise but I do plan on being very cautious and not taking any chances.

Thanks for the words of caution.

Do what I am doing now. I was just watching a bunch of video on Youtube, getting previews for some of the strips I have not been to. Specifically I am previewing Poison Springs. I really want to land there this weekend.

Did that quite a bit yesterday. There are some good vids on Hidden Splendor and Mineral Canyon.

Re: Southern Utah

I would suggest:
It really helps to study Galen's book before you head into Utah's backcountry strips. There is a lot of good info there. Anystrip that you want to go to that looks marginal to you, or you are uncomfortable with, go in with someone else first.

If you just gotta try it, try it my yourself, don't take your wife and gear. Maybe a survival kit and plenty of water. And let some one know where you are going and an approximate time you will be back.

You may get more adventure than you were plannin, but, I guess it's all part of a learning process.

What do they say
Good judgemet comes from experience, whichcomes from bad judgement.

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

Re: Southern Utah

I made it home. Heard lots of peeps on the radio from the fly-in. Sounded like they were having a good time. We ended up at Hidden Splendor.

Photos/details please..

We rode motorcycles in that area last weekend and the strip looked pristine.

Re: Southern Utah

Didn't get any real good pics. We just bought a new camera and unfortunately we are struggling with the video feature. We tried to record a takeoff and landing but failed. We did get our final departure but the quality isn't great.

The strip was in great shape, they graded it a couple weeks ago. The windsock was shredded but the guy I talked to at Hunnington said they were working on getting a new one installed. There were quite a few hikers and boaters there. The gnats were terrible; they were in my nose, ears, eyes, pretty much everywhere. I itched so bad I could barely were my headset going home. Scenery was awesome.

The strip is barely visible in the center of this pic.
