Why would you have to have the transponder certified before xcountry, can't you just choose not to have one? I suppose you probably want one which would be why it would have to be certified before using it #-o

Re: Sportsman 2+2

I don't have to have a transponder, but it comes with the deal so I might as well have one that works 8)

Re: Sportsman 2+2

Last I checked, you needed a Mode C transponder to cross from Canada into the US. So if he's flying it back to Alaska, he needs it. Of course they may have changed that again.

Re: Sportsman 2+2

You DO NOT need mode C to cross to/from Canada,or any transponder at all, unless crossing with an IFR plan. You can apply for a transponder waiver at TSA.gov, under international flight waivers. This waiver is good for 90 days at a time. TSA will email you back a number that is your proof you don't need the transponder, list that number in the remarks section of your flight plan. Takes about 2 weeks to get it, so plan accordingly.

Or, just land at one of the three airports that lie on the Montana/Canada line. Walk over and talk to customs and then takeoff again. Happens every year when we have the work parties up there, we have pilots from both countries helping out.

Re: Sportsman 2+2

One note on the new eAPIS system, landing and taxing across on wheels or floats WILL NOT exempt you from the new eAPIS requirements. That was confirmed by a Customs agent at a Q&A session I attended yesterday on the new system. You may not need a transponder by doing it that way, but flight manifest must be submitted via eAPIS prior to international flights, even those taxiing across the border.

When the new passport reg's for Canada trips were announced early last year, I got a passport. Shortly thereafter they came up with this "enhanced drivers license" idea here in Washington. The new document requirements are taking effect soon (June), and they've been showing ads on TV for the enhanced drivers license. The catch phrase is "by land or by sea, use enhanced ID"-- does this mean the enhanced DL is no good for border-crossing via airplane? I've also heard references to a "passport card"- anyone know about that?
I have the passport, but a simple card would be a good show as I'd always have it with me, fits in my wallet, etc. The enhanced DL costs $15 extra, since I need to renew next month anyway I was thinking about getting one. But since the only times I've crossed the border in 17 years of living on the frontier has been by airplane, if they don't work for that I won't bother.

Re: Sportsman 2+2

I checked with AAA travel and the Inhanced ID or "Passport Card" do not work by air! Only a passport will be accepted for air travel! Sounds kina dumb to me.

They tell me we are way ahead of schedule. It helps when you show up knowing what all the tools are and how they are used. Saves alot of explaning on their part.

Re: Sportsman 2+2

Here is day 5 of the build. The exhaust isn't on....but I'm exhausted!!! But having a blast! What a great bunch of guys I have to work with. All young whippersnappers and they are running this ole dog into the kennel
So..the engine is hung, but nothing hooked up. The seats are in all the controls are hooked up. The panel is bolted in. Have to finish off the tail cone and install the elevator faring.
So after springing for this plane, I have no money left to paint it. These guys think I'm joking when I told them I'm going to polish the metal and paint the Glass camo pattern with Krylon spray bombs. Can't wait to see how that comes out :D :D

Oh yea, I'll get my 29" AK Bushwheels and baby bushwheel tailwheel next week

Re: Sportsman 2+2

I've seen GlasStars "in the white" with bare aluminum. Looks OK, at least til yu drum upo the dough to do the paint scheme of your choice. If you fly over the woods at all, I don't think you'd want a camo or OD green paint job- just in case you end up on the ground hoping to be sighted. Hard enough to get spotted with a brightly colored airplane.

Re: Sportsman 2+2

I was gonna leave the Aluminum unpainted so I would have a bright beacon that could be seen from the air :D
Here is day 6. Not much visual progress, but alot of small stuff was done. Sticks were fitted and ready to go in, baffeling is done except for seals, breaks are bled, counter weights are done, tail is done, seat pans are fitted, fuel and oil lines are made and ready to install, throttle body is on.

Re: Sportsman 2+2

Here is day 9 of the build. We will be finished and ready to burn the brakes in by noon tomorrow. Inspection is set for Monday and first flight is set for Tuesday morning. We would have been finished today except for an electrical glitch that set us back a bit.
