Spring Utah Fly-in Pt 2 (New and improved dates May 7-9)

Alright, I just got off the phone with Rod Tangren, owner Caveman Ranch/Tangri-la(UT68). He would like to host a spring fly-in at the ranch. Some of you guys have expressed an interest in having a spring Utah fly-in, so maybe this will make a nice package.

This is a great spot, exc. dirt strip with a lot of backcountry strips nearby, and some incredible scenery if you haven't been there before. 100LL is available at Canyonlands airport, which is about 20mi. away. It is also adjoining the Colorado river, incase you would like to take a dip.

We picked the dates to be April 30-May 2, with the following weekend being the alternate if necessary. We picked this time with the idea that if spring winds are an issue, hopefully by then, they will have subsided. Much later than that, it gets pretty hot there. If you want to show up early, and/or stay later, no problem.

Rod is planning on having bathrooms and showers operational by then. He will have water and ice available. He will have the kitchen in the lodge available if you want to use his stuff for b'fast. Also has BBQ grills for cooking in the evenings

He will do a steak dinner one night(possably more)if anyone is interested. I would cook a group b'fast if enough would prefer that. He will have firewood for campfires. There are horse shoe pits, and a ball field. Pool/foosball table in the lodge. The lodge has plenty of tables and chairs and couches. It also has a nice outdoor patio for cooking and visiting in the evening.

He would like $10/night for tent camping. $30/night for a room. I think there are 3 bedrooms in the lodge, and another 9 private rooms that he is in the process of remodeling. Rooms would be available on a first come, first serve basis.

There is a release form that needs to be filled out in advance.

So, there ya go, anybody wanna come out and play =D> :D

The faster I go , the farther behind I get.

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in Pt 2

I might actually be able to do this once I finish the checkout in this Citabria and see how it does in the mountains...or I'll have to find a longer, better route to get there! Haha!

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in Pt 2

I was hoping to make this fly in and get acquainted with folks but I have a conflict on that weekend, maybe if it goes to the alternate.

Shortfielder, what’s involved in the release paperwork, I'm hoping to do some UT flying this spring and Caveman looks intriguing?

Caveman, along with the rest of SE Utah, is a great spot. I am working on posting a copy of the release here for all that need one.

We were excited to heli in Silverton — until we saw the bird. Looking like something your stoner uncle built in the garage out of four Meccano sets, a fish tank, and an AMC Pacer, this helicopter seats a pilot plus two only, making it a tricky vehicle, logistics-wise, when your group has 8 people in it. Sounds good! Should we do a fly-out for lunch on one of the days?

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in Pt 2

Hey Slash New member/first post, cool, welcome aboard

You know I never miss a meal

I would expect some of that. There are several options.
Gateway serves all 3 meals and they are all very good.
Monuement Valley has all 3 and are good.
Bluff is easy to get meals at. Recapture Lodge offers a free van.
Mexican Hat is very good. Strip is rough and used at pilots discretion.
Monticello has a coutesy car and fuel
Halls Crossing is nice, on Lake Powell.
Hopkins/Nucla has fuel and a courtesy car, never had good luck with the food.

Probably something we can discuss when we get there.

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in Pt 2

My wife asked me yesterday if we could fly down to SE Utah at the end a April...sweet. Only trouble is we don't like leaving our dog at home and he is too big to fit in the plane :( Maybe just the dog and I will go :D

Gary:

Thanks for the efforts!! Your the man! I am coordinating with the NM group and will cc you on those emails. Based on the responses you are getting, how many planes can we accommodate? Any chance we could outgrow the site?

I will be in touch. Thanks!
