Stinson 108 Rebuild Progress

So this Stinson rebuild project is coming along nice.
-alum diamond plate floors
-patrol doors
-completely rewired
-new vac lines, fuel lines
-losing as much weight as possible
-31" ABWS
-new paint
-new fasteners
-new fabric

Super excited to have this bird back in the air. Then, I get to start on the next one... its a bare fuselage though

Re: Stinson 108 Rebuild Progress

One thing I highly recommend is to look really carefully at the horizontal stab spar, behind the doublers where it attaches. I've found a whole bunch of them cracked!!
Great looking project!!

Re: Stinson 108 Rebuild Progress

Thanks yall. Ill make sure and triple check that H stab spar. It cracks on the actual stabilizer or on the piece going up from the fuselage?

Re: Stinson 108 Rebuild Progress

On the spar itself. You can get in behind to see it with a mirror and light, through the lightening holes in the spar. Or even better is a flexible borescope. The cracks I've found are usually right around or under the bolts.

Re: Stinson 108 Rebuild Progress

How much does the aluminum flooring weight compared to carpet or coin flooring, it looks cool ?

Re: Stinson 108 Rebuild Progress

If it hadn't been for my banker (wife, she requested side by each seating) and lack of a hanger I would have gladly gone with "tube & fabric", that's a great looking build

Just curious? Is this in an experimental category?

Re: Stinson 108 Rebuild Progress

The old interior that I pulled out weighed almost 70lbs and as of right now the new interior weighs 16lbs. I also shaved 9lbs off each door.

I’ve had my ap/ia come out and check on things throughout the build and he agrees that it won’t need to go “experimental”. I’ve gone back and forth with the idea though

Just as well-- by all accounts, that's easier said than done these days.
Looking good on the rebuild BTW.

Re: Stinson 108 Rebuild Progress

Here’s a little progress update. With a stuck exhaust valves and bent rod on cyl 2 on the Franklin 165, I ran across someone getting rid of a fresh rebuild 150. It has current hours and basically etc. got it for a great price with a seaplane prop included. Figured I’d do the test flying with the 150, and rebuild the 165.
So, the new stuff is a powdercoated engine mount with new engine mounted, patrol doors buttoned up, powdercoated yolks and stems, new throttle and mixture controls, and a spare “lot” of parts that included this fuselage and a ton of other stuff

Re: Stinson 108 Rebuild Progress

Any updates to this build? I'd love to see the progress. Currently in the purchasing process of a 108-3 and I think after I learn how to fly it I'll have a lot of questions about your mods.
