Stinson on I-5 in SW Washington

I was watching the evening news and thought I recognized the plane in the picture.

Jeff built this bird from pictures, etc., no blueprints. He is in the testing stage on the bird but I have a feeling this was not part of the test program.

Glad to see both Jeff and the plane are OK.

Re: Stinson on I-5 in SW Washington

That is an incredible display of workmanship on a vintage aircraft. It is most unfortunate to have landed on the freeway. The highway patrol acted rationally, the motorists got a kick out of it I am sure. BUT, wait for the rest of the story... as Paul Harvey always said. When the pension protecting, pea brain, FAA A**holes get finished with this pilot... he will wish he landed upside down in a remote ditch.
They will not let this go, I guarantee. Some SOB is just salivating for Monday morning... so he can go out and make us all SAFER. Cause that's what their mission is... right?

Flying is dangerous. If you think otherwise, you are new at this sport. Mind the gravity not the gap.

Re: Stinson on I-5 in SW Washington

I experienced the good judgement of the Nevada Highway Patrol a year and a half ago. I to was blocking part of the right lane of trafic. (we need wider shoulders on freeways) They let me takeoff during a trafic lull. I am sure that they just wanted me off their freeway.

It was a month later that the FAA got a hold of me. After I explained to them why I was out of gas and documented the cause and the fix, they said, good landing, happy no one was hurt and that the plane had no damage. They were just doing their job and I was home free.

Flightlogic, I think you may be premature in getting on the FAA this time. Well I certainly hope so.

I enjoyed reading comments to the article. None of that anti-aviation barking that comes so often after an incident like this. You folks out in PacNW are pretty laid back and that's a good thing.

That is a stunningly beautiful plane!!!! I am happy that no one was hurt and there was no damage to such a georgous plane. I sure have a soft spot in me for any of those old radial engine planes. Maybe one day I can acquire one......highly doubt it...but I can still dream.

You can find a picture history of this bird here: http://www.evergreenaviationservices.co ... estore.htm Look for Stinson Model-0 in current projects.

I think the pictures are ordered by wing then fuselage, but I really can't be sure.

Man, a fair and balanced news writeup like that is like a breath of fresh air: no Search and Rescue call outs, no "lucky to be alive comments", and the allowed freeway takeoff was the icing on the cake! :D :D :D

I guess what jumps to the front of my mind is, why is the fuel selector electric (if I'm understanding all this correctly) in this aircraft??? That doesn't make much sense to me......but hey, what do I know? I'm just glad this turned out as well as it did for all.

That's a great question I would ask as well, but when I see something like that in a newspaper article about anything aviation related, I assume it isn't accurate until proven otherwise. So I'm curious what really happened, but I sort of assumed the electric fuel selector wasn't real. But I also know nothing about this aircraft...
