Re: Straight tail project

I have a quick question for the engine guru's here.

Ok.. I have an O-470-A core. I have an engine mount, for this project that is set up for the o-470-A/J (I think).

I have an IO-470-S, engine. What are the chances that the engine mount ears, from the o470-A, would bolt onto the io-470S (The s is currently installed in the starduster ii, and we don't really want to pull it, to figure this out.)

I don't know much about the differences in o-470 continental engines. Would this make the io470 fit onto the engine mount that i currently have, or would i be better to come across a Cessna 180 engine mount, and change the legs so that it could be installed on the front of the poorman?

Re: Straight tail project

I spoke to a guy named Cooper from central WA at Airventure this year. He holds the STC to put the 470 on the Stinson. Although you're experimental, what I learned may help.

I believe that it is possible to put the mount ears on the IO-470 and it will bolt into your mount.

The STC uses the old style mount, and he tells me there can be a lot of movement in the old style rubber bushings that go in the saddle type mount from the early 180.

With the extra power and torque of the IO-470, you may have more deflection of the engine in the mount than what you'll want to tolerate. If you can get or fabricate a mount that will use the rubber pucks and later style mount ears you might be happier.

Re: Straight tail project

My 1953 C180 had the 470A engine until 1993, when it was replaced by a 470K.
They used the original engine mount, but they had to pull the mount "legs" off the old A engine to do so.
I've heard the later style rubbers are a better design

Re: Straight tail project

So it sounds like I can move the ears from 1 engine to the other. . But the words of wisdom are to change the mount to the new style of fittings because the new style is sturdier.. . Good thing I got a year or two to figure this out.

Thanks guys

Re: Straight tail project

Try Acorn Welding in Edmonton. They have a jig for nearly every mount. They might be able to fabricate something for you with the 180/185 mount up front, and matching Stinson mounts at the rear. Hopefully they can offer better prices for an experimental mount than for a certified mount. They aren't cheap!

They could also have some damaged mounts that they'll sell you for parts. I believe that their repair procedure could sometimes involve replacing every part on the mount, although they are only certified to repair, not to manufacture.

Which bungees? Are the aileron-rudder interconnects still in there?

He wants to put some big shock type of gear on. Like the just stol stuff. Preferably taller also to get a little better angle of attack.

Re: Straight tail project

Haven't updated much... been so busy working on other people's projects.
The bullet went on a diet this winter.. new landing gear.. new tail wheel. Repaired almost all the tubes in the tail... just about done this project for my friend.. I basically did the supervision and arranging parts/people etc part of this job.. I wish I could take credit for the skilled labor. Image
