Re: Tablets for Aviation

Uploaded Foreflight, played with it and created some fake but training type IFR flight plans. I.E. Didnt file. Just to try to get used to filing plans, looking for plates, maps, gps, etc. while flying, getting used to the program. Seems pretty easy to use, but so does the G430 until I figured out how much it actually does.

FF is a bit easier to use than the garmin, so less will be hidden away. But, yeah, there is some depth to it and you'll probably be finding new features for a while.

As of now I only have Free Foreflight for 30 days. I think it is the standard issue. So, as Gump stated, Id like to know more about Pro v Standard. He said it was just money and Geo Ref charts and app plates. Hmmm. Standard is $75 and Pro is $150. Is the additional $75 really worth the benefits from Standard to Pro?

If you are going to fly approaches then I think it's money extremely well spent. Can I fly approaches without FF and without georeferenced plates? Of course. But the SA from that, along with seeing yourself on airport diagrams at big unfamiliar airports, is a total no brainer to me.

Also, the ipad is easy to use, seems like its awesome. But here are my issues.
1. Touch screen seems to be a bit less reactive. i think it is because of the TechArmor screen protector I put on it. Or its maybe cause I have Fat Finger Syndrome. Im not sure, Any Ideas?

I don't use screen protectors because I think they are ugly as hell and, since I've never scratched a touch screen, the money that I've saved by not buying them would easily pay for the screen replacement at this point.

2. Tunes, i need some tunes, anyone know how to get my MP3s that are not in iTunes onto the iPad?

I'm not sure if there is another way, but the easiest is going to be simply to import them into iTunes.

3. GPS, I havent flown with it yet. With Verizon, does the internal GPS work worth a shit or should I get a BadElf type external receiver?

I only very rarely have GPS sync issues with the internal receiver. If you don't want a stratus for ADS-B purposes then I would say don't bother with an external receiver at all until you have proven that you have problems getting a sync in *your* plane. Mileage definitely varies on this subject. In a 172 I rarely had problems. In my maule I've never had a problem.

Re: Tablets for Aviation

while you're in your trial period, might as well try WingX Pro, Xavion, and FlyQ.

Re: Tablets for Aviation

LogTen Pro? I have a huge log book, and a spreadsheet I made in Excel cause Im Fn awesome at Excel (Shameless Plug Sorry). Can I export the excel sheet to .CSV and upload it to LogTenPro, Or do I just scrap the log book and use LogTenPro?

Heres my List I found after Googling from the BCP website on google:
Foreflight / WingX
Aviation W&B / WnB Pro
Measure Your Land
RadarScope / MyRadar
LiveATC
LogTenPro
Dual GPS Status Tool
Pilot FAR/AIM
Aeroweather

So, for the 2 listed on the same line, which is best? Also disregard Foreflight because Im using that now, but should I get WingX as well and use concurrently?

Re: Tablets for Aviation

HArd to say which one is better, most all of the apps do a good job... but while you are in the demo period might as try the big 4 (WingX, FF, FlyQ, Garmin) before you plunk down money and commit to one. Xavion looks cool in a cross country emergency landing, not too usefull for flying in the mountains.

Also if you want a cool way to track flights check out cloud ahoy. It's free and is pretty cool to have running in the background. If you have data you can activate and close flight plans on Lockheed's AFSS site via your web browser.

Re: Tablets for Aviation

Let me get one more vote in for the Android systems. I like being able to use removable media. My ASUS Transformer Infinity will take a 32 GB micro SD card, so I can swap them out depending on what I am doing. I have one card that is full of movies for long trips when the airlines have lousy choices or where the local theaters are showing movies in languages I don't understand. It's lots cheaper than paying for movies across the hotel TV in Russia or Japan! I've gotten great service from Avilution, the software package I use. AOPA recently rated it as the (or one of the) best options for Android and it has performed like a champ for me. My tablet was less expensive than an iPad, it was slimmer and lighter than the iPad (when I bought it) and the cameras on the tablet have higher resolution. Here's a point by point comparison:

Re: Tablets for Aviation

My Maule has the Garmin GTN 750, as well as the Garmin 796 with XM radar, so I really did not need another device.

That said, I tried a few trial programs and liked FlightGuide the best on the iPad 2.

It is certainly overkill to have three navigation devices, but is fun to watch them all do their thing.

Has anyone else tried FlightGuide?

Re: Tablets for Aviation

Don't forget that ForeFlight Pro also gets you terrain. That's arguably more important for me than the georeferenced plates.

Re: Tablets for Aviation

Anybody have a good ipad logbook recommendation? I see logten pro but $80 for a logbook is quite a bit more than I am willing to spend, and seems overkill for a private pilot.
