Tadpole who? Moving to Indiana

Not necessarily information about airstrips or airports, but more general info about a greater area or a route of flight.

Tadpole who? Moving to Indiana

Hey strangers. Well... the kids and I are relocating to Indiana. My home state, never thought I'd go back. I've not settled on an exact location, rather a large area, SSW of Indy, somewhat centered around Nashville and Bloomington (but not in Bloomington, [-X ). I have family in the area. Attaching a map image with a rough area marked.

I haven't really found any info on general aviation in the area other than looking at airports on ForeFlight and then some airport websites. Looking for any connections, or general advice as I search for a new home airport. I'll be moving this summer, once the kids finish this school year.

Oh, and I just sold the Stinson project. :( I've put that decision off for far too long, just don't have the time with being a full time single dad and a busy assed job that still has me traveling often.

Re: Tadpole who? Moving to Indiana

I just made the move (as in, I arrived in a Uhaul yesterday) of moving from Colorado back to my home state of Kentucky. I, too, never thought I'd be back but alas here we are! Can't help with the local GA scene, trying to figure that out here as well.

Good luck finding a scene and setting up base!

Dude...just want to say, whatever circumstances put you in this situation, I feel for you. I think I can read between the lines. :(

The midwest can't be as bad as they say. I moved here of my own free will having the choice of going anywhere in the world. Although it's more like southern Canada weather and cuisine-wise. 8)

Prob wise to sell the Stinson while the market is hot. I'm stupidly hanging onto the Bearhawk project but I have considered selling so many times for basically the same reasons.

I know nothing of Indiana but surely we have some contingent there.

I can say that I surely made more money selling it now than if I had the past few years. I never even got it listed.

I’m outside of Glasgow KY, south central.

Unlike you I’m not smart enough to sell my maule project, hence the massive Uhaul.

That's good bachelor-packing right there - two or three suitcases, a rolling toolbox, and an airplane project :D

Good luck on the move and sorry to hear that you had to sell the Stinson. I've been wondering how that been coming.

I'm bummed, but less so after getting to know the new caretakers....but still bummed. But, once life calms down, I'm sure I'll get another project.... but probably not until after I buy a flying one first this time!

Re: Tadpole who? Moving to Indiana

Good luck on the moves!!! No advice really here but if you have not seen the videos there is a strip called Rogers International in KY that looks like a lot of fun and hosts a fly in 2 times a year. Hoping to make it up there in the Husky for at least one of them this year.

There are some flawed personalities that hang out here who can take a decent flying airplane and convert it to a project on a dreary afternoon. So, be wary.

Tadpole,

I'm in FWA. Grew up in IN, lived all over the world. Spent time out west too. Midwest is a great place for some things. Not so much for others. It all depends on persecutive. We don't have a lot of true "back country" flying but there are many grass strips to partake of throughout the region,

Back home again in Indiana. You will like it once you get settled in. I'd suggest a project with a bit of speed.

Hey MW. I grew up in southern Indiana, did a little flying around back then but that was decades ago as a kid, and not in the area I'm relocating to. I will likely end up buying a flying plane sooner than later once I'm settled and find a new home airport....and ya, something with some speed would be fun.

Re: Tadpole who? Moving to Indiana

I'm in Floyd County Indiana, been here since 1989. I hangared at Salem (I83) for many years but now fly out of a private strip in Leitchfield,KY. Its 90 miles from my house but free. Local GA is pretty good once you meet a few people. Rough River KY is a good destination for restaurant flights. I used to fly into Lee Bottom in Hanover,IN but haven't been there in a while. I made a trip north the Hagerstown,IN last summer, pretty cool grass strip. I'm from Kansas City and moved here to be close to Louisville for my job. Always thought I would move back after retirement in 2016 but I'm established in a rural area on 6 acres and don't see the point in moving. I'm good with Indiana.

Hagerstown is a true gem. One of the nicest grass strips in the region. We have added it to the RAF Airfield Guide recently.
