Tadpole who? Moving to Indiana

Not necessarily information about airstrips or airports, but more general info about a greater area or a route of flight.

Re: Tadpole who? Moving to Indiana

While flying my Maule from Washington State to Virginia, we passed through Indiana. The biggest thunderstorm scare I ever had was there. We were tossed around like a rag doll. Stuff in the baggage area wound up hitting me in the pilot's seat and my headset was ripped off my head. That was just outside of Lafayette. I managed to get out of the grasp of the storm and made it to Muncie for the night. After landing in one piece, I swore I'd give Indiana a wide berth whenever possible in the future. When I managed to move the plane and family back to Washington State I was a happy camper. I like having mountains and salt water nearby. My return trip followed a much more southern route across the country. I have immense respect for midwest weather now. Hopefully, you'll never be caught aloft when the mean clouds and wind show up!

Thanks Jughead. I was just in ASA Flight Ops again this past week. Maybe one of these times I'll run into you!

Local GA is pretty good once you meet a few people. Rough River KY is a good destination for restaurant flights. I used to fly into Lee Bottom in Hanover,IN but haven't been there in a while. I made a trip north the Hagerstown,IN last summer, pretty cool grass strip. I'm from Kansas City and moved here to be close to Louisville for my job. Always thought I would move back after retirement in 2016 but I'm established in a rural area on 6 acres and don't see the point in moving. I'm good with Indiana.

Thanks for the info!

Good to know. I've been a RAF member for years. I'll look over there for info as well.

I'm under contract for a place just north of Martinsville. Looks like several private strips nearby and a few public ones in all directions within 20nm

Wow! Awesome looking place! I hope you find a nice airport close by you can call your second home. Looks like things are coming together.

Is that your barn/garage to the left in the picture?

That's a great looking place!

You are only about 75 miles north of me... as the Cessna flies. Our little "hundred dollar hamburger" group flies up to Lafayette, TN and Livingston, TN occasionally. We were just in Livingston a couple of weeks ago.

When you get your hands on an airplane you should join us!

Re: Tadpole who? Moving to Indiana

Welcome back to Indiana! I am in the Southeast corner of the state and would be happy to show you around to some good spots we have. We have a good group and typically fly at least once a week. Surprisingly we have a decent amount of off airport options (gravel bars, fields, grass strips). Also not far away in Kentucky, there are a bunch of uncharted spots to go to.

Re: Tadpole who? Moving to Indiana

Interesting how things change. I'm still in Indiana, but moved about 45mins east of where I was. The log home is under contract and scheduled to close soon. I'm now in Franklin, about 5 mins from Franklin Flying Field 3FK. While the issues in life haven't quite settled down, they are improving and should be resolved this fall. So with that, it's time to get my butt back to flying. Just starting to look for an AME, CFI and a rental. It's been too long!

That's a beautiful home, Tadpole. Colorado will miss you. Hoping things continue on the up for you and run into you again at some point.

I also hope that Stinson gets back in the air eventually. Did you sell it to someone here in Colorado?

I've been gone from Colorado for almost two years, it doesn't miss me :) The log home was great, but it's now sold too. I built a new house that I'm living in, normal suburbia unfortunately, but was the right decision.

I sold the Stinson to a friend and I'm regularly updated with it's progress. It's looking great and I think it will fly this year.

Thanks brother. I still get up your way from time to time for work either to meet with my team or ASA... but lately all my trips have been too busy to get out and see anyone. If it looks like I'll get some free time next time I'm in town, I'll shoot you a text.
