Re: The Challenge

Hopefully you get some takers and everyone has a good enough time to do it again.
I would be in Rob's camp on the LZ lengths with 29" airhawks.

Re: The Challenge

I think with a little instruction we could shorten those lengths up. There are a few good places to practice that have a lot of room on Cottonwood.

If you are going to show up don't come with a full tank of fuel, Kelso is right next door so you can begin on 10-15(20 max) gallons. Bring two 5 gallon gas cans to add fuel when you get down to that .5 hour of fuel range. Keep it light!

I hardly ever fly around with a lot of fuel when I play, last weekend I filled up because there was a lot of wind and I knew that I could pretty much go any place I wanted full. The same holds true for bringing a passenger, your aircraft is going to perform a lot different with an extra 180 lbs sitting with you. Once you get what you can do with a light airplane dialed in then you can start hauling weight into places that you might not of looked at before. Knowing your airplane is what this is all about, knowing exactly when your tires are going to touch the ground only comes from thousands of landings. Knowing how hard you can get on the brakes only comes from constant practice. Wheel landing are a must in the tool box, if you can't wheel land you need to be practicing them with the use of brakes. You can not land a rough spot 3 point to many times without being bucked into a bad situation.

These are just some examples of things that you can learn by showing up but again this is free advice and if it does not fit for you, you don't have to use it.

Re: The Challenge

If I do something with the wife Saturday I can play Sunday till 3ish and still have time to get gas and stuff I need and get to Madras before dark.

Do I really need the 35s or will the 29 Air Hawks do?

Cheers...Rob

Re: The Challenge

So far I have not got anyone to really sign up for Saturday, maybe it sounds to crazy for some or scary. Lets start it off with just getting together on Cottonwood for a meet up, if anyone wants to go for a ride I will take them for a ride in Bushwacker, I will do some landings in different places on the island.

We could then choose some spots that are less intimidating and work on fundamentals, I will give any pointers I can on making better landings or take offs. This will be a free clinic with no liability taken on my end for the free advice, my advice may help or you may choose to ignore.

Does this get anyones interest, if so sign up,

If others are still interested in doing the Challenge we can pick a time later in the day.

I think that is a fun idea Greg! But I don't think you are going to find to many people out there that are going to challenge you flying "Bushwacker"! I think it would be a great opportunity for some of you guys in the the area to get some expert backcountry flying experience with Greg! If you like this kind of flying guys, I would be all over it if I lived in that area!
Greg, not to get off the subject of your post, if you are interested, I would like to invite you and some other experienced Backcountry pilots to do "a little tour" as I call it, down through south eastern Utah some time between the middle of March or April. The type of flying can be from landing on mountain ridges to landing on sand bars and some UT Backcountry airstrips! And of course some camping! Just an idea if anyone is interested!

Cattle car Rob. Wish I was flying the Bo. Gonna visit my sister for a few days. Don't like flying single engine over the mountains in the winter.

It's not a single. It has 6 cylinders, what are the odds all 6 quit. DOH :D I here ya though.

Remember I flew the Maule around one summer on 5 cylinders, it was kinda punnie too.

FWIW, AIM 4-1-11 specifies 122.75 as the official air to air frequency.
