Just finished "The Greatest Flying Stories Ever Told: Nineteen Amazing Tales from the Skies", a compilation of excerpts from some great flying stories that ran from Len Deighton's great description of a WWI dogfight in "Winter's Morning" through John Glenn's first Earth Orbit as told in Tom Wolfe's "Orbit" from "The Right Stuff". Included are 19 stories from some great writers. For those of us who think we're pretty hot stuff on short field ops, "Carrier Qual" by Douglas C. Waller gives a pretty vivid description of a young naval aviator's two day check out doing his first carrier landings strapped to a T45 Goshawk. Failure to qualify ended any chance at being a fighter pilot. Part 4 of this part 4 book includes two tales of airline disasters told by survivors of terrible disasters. I'd have preferred a different close, but the stories give unique perspective.
If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it.
