A man who tried to steal a helicopter at gunpoint outside a flight school in Oregon was fatally shot by police on Monday. The incident began when a man wearing a gray hoodie, with the hood up, approached the Hillsboro Airport’s chain-link fence and climbed over. An observer, who was there with his family to watch the planes, told police, "For a moment, I thought to myself that it was a little warm for the big, thick, gray hoodie with the hood over him,” according to the Oregonian. The man told reporters when the man jumped the fence, he rushed his family into the car and left the scene.

At 11:23 a.m., the man went up to a helicopter with a flight instructor and student inside as it was parked with its rotor spinning at Hillsboro Aero Academy, Lt. Henry Reimann, a Hillsboro police spokesman, told the Oregonian. The man opened the door, pointed a gun at the student and ordered the student out. When the student hesitated, the man fired the gun away from the helicopter and the student got out and ran away, Reimann said. The gunman then went to the other side of the helicopter and pointed a gun at the instructor. He ordered the instructor out and then jumped in. "According to the sergeant that approached, it appeared he knew what he was doing in the cockpit," Reimann said. Employees from Hillsboro Aero, armed with personal firearms, and a police officer approached the helicopter and held the man at gunpoint. The suspect fled, going back over the fence, across the road and into a field. A Hillsboro police officer encountered the man there and shot him, Reimann said. The man died at the scene.

Have to wait and see what the police say the motive is for wanting to steal a helicopter is because I can't think of one right now.

Re: The Only Good Horse Thief......

I realize that parts/instruments etc. are stolen out of airplanes/helicopters here and there.. but I've kind of always assumed stealing things that fly was not real common at least in the US. Somewhat of a self preservation kind of thing. I realize it does happen from time to time.... but if it's true the guy knew how to fly one, that - to me anyway, adds a bit of a bizarre twist.

Like to hear more about what happened here. Anyway, as soon as he brought a gun into the situation he entered a whole other level. I for one have and obviously believe in CC permits. But I'm also glad there was an officer there to make the call on that situation.... you just can't go pointing guns at people and stealing things and discharging rounds and expect a good outcome. Crazy deal!

Re: The Only Good Horse Thief......

I suspect this another case of someone with simulator experience that wanted to see if he could do the real thing.

Hypothesis? LE was on scene quickly. He was running from another crime scene and police caught up as he tried to hijack the heli for a get away.

Prison break gone bad? (I have no idea, but that would be pretty cool...)

Re: The Only Good Horse Thief......

When I lived in France a couple of guys hijacked a helicopter and successfully broke a guy out of jail. They duct taped the pilot into his seat but otherwise he was unharmed. The airfield was a couple of miles from the prison. This was a thing in France for a while, then they put wire netting over prison yards.

Re: The Only Good Horse Thief......

Jail break happened down under a few years back

http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/real-l ... 7c7014ef9b

Enjoyed my time training at Hilsboro Acedemy in April for my US PPL conversion and wasn't aware anyone was "carrying" which is, at least as I understand it, one the tenets of "concealed" carry.

Also not at all concerned that staff were / could be armed - never going to be allowed down here in Australia, no second amendment. 99.9% of the time would not be needed down here, but that 0.1% seems to be happening more often!

Looking forward to a New Holstein visit on the Sunday drive to Osh

All the best.

Re: The Only Good Horse Thief......

Of course, if he thought he could fly it because he was a fixed wing pilot (or thought that MS Sim prepared him), this is what might have happened:

Re: The Only Good Horse Thief......

I don't think the death penalty is in effect for rotorcraft threat but given the fact that he threatened the instructor and student with death the fact the thief was gunned down does not break my heart.

Sometimes, rarely, an a-hole gets what's coming to them (on Earth at least).

Other a-holes would do well to learn from their experience.

That right there was a funny comment. Can't believe nobody said so already.
