Those flying from the west to Oshkosh. (2013)

Ok EVERYBODY if you are flying from the west to Oshkosh you are invited to land at KLYV Luverne, MN. We could easily be your last leg as we are 332 nm from Oshkosh.

Any of you that have read other threads from me know that my son Ben owns Sierra Delta Aviation LLC at KLYV (ok yeah I'm a little proud of the kid). Now here is the draw for all of you. From July 24 the Wednesday before Oshkosh to Aug 8th the Thursday after Oshkosh and during Oshkosh, Ben and Lori, (his wife), put out a spread for all pilots and passengers you won't believe. They started this in 2010 in KCUT Custer, SD and had a fantastic turnout, they are continuing this in Luverne.

Pulled pork sandwiches
Potatoe Salad
Macaroni Salad
Baked Beans
Blue Berry Muffins (These would be worth stopping for if it was the only thing)
Two to three deserts

Fruit and Bagels also at Breakfast

All served in an air conditioned Hanger. It's all homemade, AND THE BEST PART IS, ITS ALL FREE!!!!!!!!

If that is not enough KLYV is always the cheapest Avgas and JetA in SE South Dakota, SW Minnesota and NW Iowa. The price as of Wed July 17th is $5.01 100LL

This is SD Aviation's way of showing their appreciation for General Aviation. Stop when going to and stop going home. Please let all your flying friends know whether they belong to BCP or not.

I should mention also, there is camping on the field. There will be one fifth wheel camper on the field available for rent, it sleeps 5 (call Ben @ 605-four one three-5028), it has kitchen, bathroom, and shower.

Just a mile up the road is town where there are motels etc.

I'm told they have never run out of food.

That sounds like a wonderful offer, worth going a bit out of the way for.

Re: Those flying from the west to Oshkosh.

My plans are always a little loose, but I'm aiming to take off around 8 a.m. Greeley (Mountain) time on Saturday. Depending on the winds, it's about a 3 1/2 hour flight, so that should put me in Luverne around 12:30 or so Central time. I calculated this new route against my usual route to OSH, and I'll save 4 whole miles! :)

I'll look for ya.

Note to all: The city of Luverne had just received their load of fuel last Wed the 17th, it's looking like we are going to have to get more on Sat the 27th. The load last week was set at $5.01, Saturdays load may go up slightly, but KLYV will still be the lowest in the area as we always are.

The city of Luverne owns the fuel, it is their practice to only mark it up enough to cover mainteance costs on the fuel island, which doesn't come out to much. We went through 800 gals today alone.

Re: Those flying from the west to Oshkosh.

We did get fuel Sat morning, and the price increased stightly. It went up to $5.12, only 11cents. It is going to be held at this price until Aug 7th.

Have a great flight to Oshkosh,

Things are getting exciting. I was out getting the plane ready, aired the tires & other items. I noticed planes 3 deep at the fuel pump,(BUU). I'm fueled up & ready to go Monday.

Re: Those flying from the west to Oshkosh.

Its been a lot of fun so far. This is really Ben & Lori's gig, but Tracy (my wife ) and I do have an official title of "airport bums". Tracy and I have spent the entire weekend at the airport even camping there Sat night.

I've also met my first real live BCPer's (you're not just text that appears on screens), "Cary" and later "Kase". Cary flew in and had lunch and we had a good conversation. Kase flew in and it turns out we used to ride the same school bus when we were kids.

Sat we had between 40 and 45 planes come through, Sun maybe 12, probably because the weather in and around KOSH kind of sucked.

Tomorrow we are told that a PV2D Harpoon is coming through and is taking on 900 Gal of 100LL. I will post pics if it happens.

Re: Those flying from the west to Oshkosh.

What a great day, I met another BCPer, FLYNAKD (what a beautiful Stinson) Nate was a good guy too.

About 15 min after Nate landed the PV2D Harpoon flew in. They fueled up & oiled up. They dumped I think 20 or 25 gals of oil in each wing. This thing has twin P&W 2800 that's a total of 4000 HP. The plane belongs to Stockton Field Air Museum in Stockton, CA and it was on its way to Oshkosh and to met up with the only 2 other PV2D Harpoons still flying. What a fantastic crew these guys were amazing and man they were having fun. When they left they took off they went around for a low pass, they went right over my head not fifty feet up, you could feel the down wash as they passed. I'm really glad they were on our side.

Here is a pic hopefully more to come,
