Holy smokes... yeah those blimp hangars are the best part, in my opinion. I hope they are used for aviation.

I'm glad they're getting out of the 'Rust Belt' in tillamook. Didn't one hangar burn down or something?

Anyone ever notice that basketball hoop up high on the south side of the hangar? That always cracked me up.

Yes in 1992 one burned. One left standing.

This week, construction of the new Erickson Aircraft Collection Facility is expected to be completed, making it ready to house a museum.

Designed to accommodate at least 25 aircraft, the 64,000-square-foot facility will be the new home for the World War II era aircraft collection of Jack Erickson, according to Mike Oliver, general manager of the Tillamook Air Museum, where the entire collection was on display until recently. There, the aircraft are housed in a drafty, 325,000-square-foot World War II blimp hangar.

"We’re really excited to get our hangar open and moved in," said Oliver, who has already moved 18 of the 26 or so aircraft from Tillamook to Madras, and is looking forward to setting up the new museum. "We flew a lot of them over last week."

Re: Tillamook Air Museum moving to Madras

Will the aircraft fly to Madras, out do they have to be trucked? If they are flying, it would be great to be around for the launch! That would be an airshow all by itself!

Neat! I drug my wife, brother and sister out there earlier this spring. It's a neat collection but the hangar needs some TLC for sure. Glad they're keeping the collection together!

Re: Tillamook Air Museum moving to Madras

The annual airshow at Madras may be a bit more interesting this year. The blimp hanger is owned by the city of Tillamook, it needs major structural repairs, estimates on the repair cost are $15,000,000 -$1,000,000,000.

No restaurant at this point. Madras FBO has crew cars, lots of food places in town. 2 minute drive or 20 minute walk. Black Bear diner my fav. Safeway, Subway, Mazatlan 20 minute walk.

I was their yesterday, it is pretty cool to see the B17 Madras Maiden parked on the ramp.

Cheers

Tillamook Air Museum moving to Madras

It would really be a shame to see the old blimp hangar go completely to hell. No way a city as small as Tillamook could float that one. Not sure if true, but it seems like the brochure said there's not enough old growth left to build another one. I agree with Z above, the building was as much a part, or more of the visit as the aircraft. It was like stepping back in the days when my Grandpa was a young, scared kid in Germany, if only for a few hours. I sure don't blame the guy that owns the airplanes though, I would want to be in drier country too.

End of an era I guess. Sad. I still have my pictures. :D

That's how it was this spring. Lots of RVs and boats parked in the back for the hangar.
