TIRES

** I am not lazy, and did try searching data base for this before posting **

Just pulled the trigger on Airglas Nose Fork for my 1958 Cessna 172. ( Jared P is responsible for this and impending divorce if my wife sees how much I have just spent !).

Now need help on tire selection -

Am used to having Air Hawks on my 172 and on previous 150.

Am going 8.50 X 6 on Mains, 8.00 X 6 on Front.

Good Year or Air TRAC's??? Other suggestions??

Re: TIRES

I would also do the smooth Desser 8.50s (actually I did). They're the softest and lightest 8.50s you can get. And no tread to throw rocks. They also make a smooth 8.00 that you can put on the nosewheel.

Re: TIRES

I put the super hawk 8.50 on the mains and the 8.00's on the nose. I'm happy with the combo!

Re: TIRES

You're welcome for the divorce :D I plan on putting the smooth desser 8.50s and 8.00 on mine . Wish the would have been available when I purchased. I believe they're about 4 lbs ea. Lighter than the goodyears. I believe this is what crazyivan put on his 182 recently

Yeah we did. And I put them on my dads 172. His are holding up good. They are only a pound heavier than 6.00's

Re: TIRES

Dresser smooths look good. looks like 5 lbs difference from the goodyears according to the websites. I have the goodyears on mine, bought the complete package from Todd at Hitchcock. I fly 50/50 asphalt and grass, the goodyears are holding up really well. I wonder where the weight savings is mainly in the dressers? If it is 5 lbs of tread rubber, might not be such a good deal if you still pound pavement a good portion of your time.

Re: TIRES

Just curious... do smooth tires on the nose track any differently on a 172 or 182 than tires with tread?

My experience, no. The reason for tread on airplane tires is solely to displace water into the tread grooves to prevent hydroplaning on asphalt or concrete. The only other purpsoe tread serves is to throw pebbles on the tail an belly.

Re: TIRES

I am leaning towards that same set up.... majority of my flying is off of hard surface.
Trying to figure out how the AIRTRACS would measure up endurance wise against the AIRHAWKS.

Re: TIRES

This has nothing to do with 172s I know but it's a convenient place to ask; whats the name of that bush type tire that's not an AK bushwheeels? Isn't that a Desser?

Answered my own question. https://www.desser.com/pc_combined_resu ... pt5~Tundra)&search_keyword=Tundra

As you were.

Re: TIRES

I recently put Good Year 26" tires on our Superhawk and they seem to do real well. They hold up well on asphalt and are great in the back country. Here is a picture of ours on our 2,200 strip in the Wrangell Mountains:
