I didn't take advantage of any of the local discounts or freebies, but I appreciate the recognition for me and my fellow vets. Although I didn't go to southeast Asia, I served during Viet Nam (USAF JAG), and just like most who served then, I occasionally experienced the public's dissatisfaction with that war. I am really glad that our kids returning from the desert aren't being mistreated the way many vets of the late 60s and early 70s were. That was a tough time.
Now, let's all pool our obvious superior intellect (after all, we're all pilots, the highest form of humans, right?) and figure out how to solve all the conflicts in the world so that wars can be strictly a thing of the past. Whenever I see a story about some young kid who was maimed by an IED or suffers the silent injury of PTSD, I do so wish that no more youngsters would have to suffer.
But in the meanwhile, thanks to all my friends, on here and elsewhere, who served or are serving. Until we are able to do something about our human penchant to fight over our differences, it is all of us (and our allies) who serve who have made us free and who will maintain our freedom.
