Top Overhaul at 770hrs? 0-360-A1P
Have problems with your aircraft? Maybe just questions about how best to tune or adjust something? Regs or maintenance? Need to know the best way to do something?

Considering a husky that is for sale that had a top overhaul around 770hrs SNEW on an 0-360. New cam and lifter bodies, new pistons and rings, new main and rod bearings, new exhaust guides, valves and seats ground, etc
Seems a bit early for this?
Thanks,
Travis

Stated as no-damage history. I have an inquiry out as to 'why'

I'd bet that it's an engine that sat without running for a period of time at some point in its life.
No, this is not normal, but if all that was done fairly recently, or it's been very active since done, I wouldn't be afraid of it at all. It suggests that the problem was fixed.

Looks like an overhaul resulting from non-usage, and subsequent corrosion of the cam. If that's the case, better that the previous owner took care of it, rather than a new owner figuring that out after 50 hous of use.
Even less of a concern if they had the work done by a reputable shop. You should be able to figure all this out by asking.

More than likely had Aeroshell 15-50 in it and sat for a long time. That would be my guess. I know many, my uncle included, who have had rust issues with Aeroshell 15-50 if not flown frequently. Some were hangared in heated hangars, some were outside in dry environments and moist.

Here is the details. Sounds like a well maintained plane.
" It was a cam issue. My mechanic noticed #3 intake lobe and lifter body started to slightly wear (approx .0010 - .0015). Happens in Lycoming engines. Added the oil cooler air intake valve. At the time I was planning to keep, So I did almost a full OH."
Any recommendations for a pre-buy mechanic near Gig Harbor (Tacoma)?

Sounds like a conscientious and honest owner. Good that they caught it early, too.
Can't help with a pre buy, but it sounds like these folks have their stuff together, which is a good sign.

Last year I bought a Maule that was based on Vashon Island, just a few miles from Gig Harbor. The Maule had only flown 18 hours in the previous 2 years and had a badly corroded cam. The O-360 only had 900+ hours. The problem was discovered during the pre-purchase inspection and the purchase price for the plane was renegotiated based on the problem. I put about 130 hours on it in the last year and it runs like a top. It doesn't burn oil (I put new pistons and rings in and had the cylinders honed) and have had NO complaints since I bought it. Lycoming engines don't like to sit idle. Use it, or lose it!

I feel bad when my airplane sits for more than a week.

Hello 29singlesped my name is Tim Boughner of Tim's Aircraft Repair located near Gig Harbor, I am the mechanic that found the cam wear in the Husky you are looking at and I did the engine rebuild. I also found the cam wear in FlyHouns Maule during his pre buy last year.
If you would like a pre buy contact me 253-857-3642
