Has anyone flown a PA14 with a 180horse engine I was wondering how comparable it would be to a supercub with the same load. I believe its the same wing and tail but less angle of incidence.

You could probably find some previous discussion about this on (sorry, zano) supercub.org .

Currie,

I've flown a PA-14 with a 180. They are great airplanes. They are not, however, really comparable to a Super Cub in takeoff performance, for the reasons you suggest. They are also scarce as hen's teeth, hence the reason a lot of folks have gone the experimental route, building "bushmasters" or "producers", etc. using a stretched Pacer fuselage with Cub wings.

The stock flaps on a 14 are pretty small as well. Stick controls, side by side seating, but really "cozy" with two up front.
But, nice airplanes. If you can find one cheap, it'll be worth a LOT of money if cleaned up, and a big engine added, but it's going to likely take a lot of work.

The fuselages were largely mild steel tubing as well, like the other Piper T/W airplanes. These are all old (1947 or so) and corrosion in those aft tubes is often an issue. Get someone reallys smart to look at one if you're considering it and bring bags of cash.

Look at supercub.org on the exp cubs forum--a guy just posted a pic of his "Air Wagon", based on a PA-14 fuselage & powered by a 300-horse 540. Whew!

Am I right on this? With bad knees, I heard that it is a lot easier to get into a PA 12 or a PA 14 than a PA 18. Ss long as you are not doing hard core the 12 and the 14 are just fine.

Let me also say that I have not flown in either.

what I was wondering is if it would do a similar job with a small load and have the room to take more stuff if you have a suitable runway. we would keep one supercub for the really tight stuff.
what i am thinking is if i can get similar performance to a pa12 or c170/180h with a fabric airplane (easy to repair) with more room than a supercub or pa12. also part interchangeability with a cub would be a bonus.

ccurrie,

In short--yes. Bring lots of money, though. You'll probably pay more for a good modified 14 than you would for a good 180.

well the pa14 is in the hangar now its time to start modifying. does any one know of an up gross that is good for more than 85lbs? it must be STCed as the plane will be regestered comercial and 337s wont fly in canada. also what 180 conversion is best, we are looking at crosswinds, does anyone have any experience with them?

Hi
would you post some pics of the 14.
It will be great to hear what you have to say about your new bird when you get some hours on it.

Re: piper PA14

That is a work of art. You must be proud. Looking fwd to a pirep! BTW, is that a sheep in the tail badge? I seem to recall seeing an equally gorgeous supercub at Watson Lake once with such a decal on the tail.

Take care, Rob

Re: piper PA14

heres the low down so far.

crosswonds stol gross weight increase 1935lbs, empty weight under 1200lbs we were hoping for 2000lb gross but crosswinds is the only one we could find and its close.

crosswinds extended bagage upper and lower with bagage door

crosswinds 0-360 conversion with short mount

3in extended cub gear with AOSS

crosswinds seaplane doors

the floor is flat from the stick to the back of the extended baggage

Most of the work was done by performance air in caldwell idaho they did an incredible job and I would highly recomend them ,it looks like it should be going to oshkosh to get medals hung on it not going to the far north to get bounced down gravel bars.

the visibility over the nose is better then a cub because of the crosswinds cowel ,at gross with a slight wind it got off in under 300ft but does'nt come out of ground effect like a cub, but then the ROC is way higher than a cub , it even beat the turbo 185 to 10 000ft!. Cruse is suprisingly no faster then a cub, sholder room in the front sucks we had to stager the front seats to make it livable.

Rob you probly did see the cubs in watson we go through there every summer and every fall with 2 cubs and a 206.

Ill post more pics as soon as I have some out of the hangar. thre is a pic in my galery of what we started with but its a compressed image and im not smart enough to get it to imbed.
