TR: Ground-bound in Minnesota

Another Minnesota family vacation in the rearview... although this time with exponentially greater encumbrance in the form of TWO kids. And for whatever reason, weather, timing with Fourth of July, squandered political capital in the community... I couldn't bum a ride in an airplane for the life of me. Perhaps people are afraid I'll film them now since the 2016 video. 8)

Either way, I can be perfectly happy as a lurking, stalking trespasser at seaplane bases in the land of lakes with my camera. Perhaps this will entertain someone. It's always fun to indulge in some macroscopic storytelling that's mildly relevant. Prepare for a deluge of photos.

For those new to the community or my tales of glorified poserdom, I have family in the Iron Range of Minnesota. My wife and I, and now our two daughters, like to trek out there on a commercial flight from PDX to MSP, rent a car, and drive up to the northeast part of the state to spend 10 days or so at my brother-in-law's house on Long Lake. Repeat every couple years.

There's something about the flat greenery and plentiful lakes up there that really speaks to me.

Image

As seen on the ceiling of the Ash River Trail Lodge restaurant. I wonder whose bright idea it was to mirror that photo.

Sights like this start my gears turning about what life could be like here...it's a happy place. Then there's talk of -50 F in the winter and I sober up.

Image

Midnight trip to relieve the bladder and I was reminded what stars are like outside the light pollution of the metropolis. It's also fun to stumble around outside in your underwear and flip flops to shoot long exposures. This one is pretty crappy, I don't know how people shoot those awesome astro pics.

Image

I drove up to Cook, Minnesota to visit an old BCP friend with a place on Lake Vermillion. Driving...alone...accompanied by only the local classical station and my thoughts. It's a luxury I crave and rarely can indulge anymore.

Image

Russ and I had lunch and caught up, then, inspired by a conversation with G44, drove out to the site of the old Wien homestead, which happens to be where my friend's folks now live.

So much green.

After a day in Voyageurs National Park slapping at huge meat-eating flies, we woke up and drove to the town of Ely, where we took the girls swimming in Shagawa Lake, and then lurked down near the forestry seaplane base.

Image

Found this lonely old J4 parked nearby. Looked ready to go, so I imagine someone is enjoying it.

Stopped at the Tower airport to enjoy the nice restroom in the log cabin pilot lounge, and found this really cool framed Beaver poster. Nice spot to stop on a solo XC. They have a loft with a bed upstairs.

Image

Some photographic treasures were found amidst the overgrowth.

Lake boat fossil, practically a work of nature vs humans art.

Image

Stalking Jeep.

Image

One of my favorite spots, Sky Harbor on Ely Lake in Eveleth/Fayal Township. I got sunburned snooping around and taking pics.

Image

My friend Ted lives next door, and we caught up, talking Skywagons and lake living. Ted is a great guy. He's got a really nicely designed bar.

Image

A few days later I returned to see what was going on, and the airport manager, who I guess is here on BCP, gave me permission to climb around on the most gorgeous Aeronca Sedan parked at the doc. I've always been enamored with these aircraft and it was a pleasure. The only thing better would have been to take it for a few laps.

Ever been inside one? Very roomy with the back seat removed. BTW you can have a brand new one...just call Burl Rogers.

Image

Image

So many Skywagon guys here...probably thinking "who cares, what about that wagon?" Snooze...

Image

Image

Image

Anyone recognize this Super Cub?

Image

It belonged to the late great Minnesota local boy David Jarenson. I didn't catch the name of the new owner but it's still a beautiful machine.

Image

Image

Back to the house for a little Fourth of July pontoon flotilla around the lake with 5 young girls ages 2 to 11. Kids are truly a way to stay young or die trying.

Final day...off to MSP at 6:30am...gorgeous wx to be flying so low. 'Til next time, Minnesota.

Re: TR: Ground-bound in Minnesota

Awesome write up Zzz! Yes, MN is truly a great place, but it takes a bit to survive the winters. I've lived in many places in this world and I came back to MN, maybe I'm just night right in the head! LOL
Bummer our schedules were conflicted, hopefully next time we can meet.
Oh, awesome pictures!

Re: TR: Ground-bound in Minnesota

Very cool Zane! Not that I like the cold, being a Fairbanks boy, I could survive there. I would love to have a small place on a lake up there.

Kurt

PS, I see they corrected the spelling on Wien road. Thats great!

Re: TR: Ground-bound in Minnesota

Kurt, in addition to the northeast / arrowhead country, look at the lakes on the west side of Mille Lacs or near Crosby - Ironton - Deerwood and around Aitkin. You can probably find something at a reasonable price and the water is great! Anything near the Hwy 371, Gull, Whitefish area is is getting $$.

My wife has been sending me listings in the Tower/Vermillion area. Some of them are pretty $$$. Would you say that's high for the outside-the-cities Minnesota?

Re: TR: Ground-bound in Minnesota

Not really that high considering Lake Vermillion lakefront properties are some of the more expensive in the State. (LV is a premier lake.) Properties off the lake are much much lower (but the whole reason to be there is the water). The highest state property values are going to be:

Lake Minnetonka on the west side of the cities / White Bear lake on the Northeast side of the cities / Gull Lake chain of lakes / Whitefish chain of lakes / Pelican (both of the two big ones) / Lake Vermillion and the Woman lake chain.

Other popular spots are the Grand Rapids area (Pokegama, the Wabana chain and Deer), Big Sandy, Rainy Lake, Lake of the Woods, Park Rapids chains, Crane Lake, and then the lake chains west near Detroit Lakes and Alexandria.

But there are a ton of smaller lakes that are near all these areas that don't command the same price tags. If you want to be somewhat near your relatives, I would look east of Grand Rapids to Hoyt Lakes and down to north of Duluth.

Re: TR: Ground-bound in Minnesota

You can go most anywhere in the state on floats. The Twin City Metro has about half of the lakes off limits (especially those downtown), but there are still plenty to use when going in and out of Mpls/StPaul. The other off limits area is the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness near Ely. Only Henny gets to play around on those waters in the US Forest Service Beaver. He has two or three to choose from at the base. https://www.instagram.com/hennycub/ 8)

Re: TR: Ground-bound in Minnesota

Might have been Henny's plane! Not sure if the post was ever filled, but there was job opening flying those planes that had gone unfilled for nearly a year. If I were qualified, I danged sure would have applied!! Northern MN takes a special kind of person to be able to live and enjoy it though. Spring through fall are awesome (sans the bugs), and winters are doable if on can adapt. There is a lot to do during the winters also as long as you are willing to dress for the cold and willing to accept it for what it is....cold and snow.

BRD said it...there are nearly endless places here in MN to land a floatplane. I sold mine a few years ago it is has to be the biggest regret I have ever had in selling a plane. I do have a set for my RANS, but have never gotten to the point where I installed them.

I live north of Park Rapids and it is a good place to live. Close enough to Bemidji also that I can get most anything I need. Lots of Lake homes for sale in the area and some can be had for a fair price if you are willing to be a little off the beaten path.I will mention that the area population explodes in the summer from the 'damned tourists' that show up to enjoy the area. Little 'ol Park Rapids airport generall has several jets and dozen smaller GA planes from the 'upper crust' types that come from all over the country to spend a few days at their lake homes.

And, don't forget that the "Land of Ten Thousand Taxes" also applies significantly higher property taxes to lakefront properties.

It's about on par with Oregon.

If the lake home is your primary residence, you can get a homestead exemption. Sometimes under certain circumstances, you can file and get a partial refund. I don't think this will apply to you Zane, but a military disability also gets a good tax break on homesteaded property.

Oh, shit, you’re actually thinking about it! Going from OR to MN shouldn’t be a huge shock. In MN they let you pump yer own gas. But if you like taxes.....MN will like you.

Zane, sorry the weather didn't work out. Next time you are headed to MN, give a shout. We will get you some float time.

Re: TR: Ground-bound in Minnesota

Haven't been back there for a long time!!! A friend that I went to A&P school with (Jim Harry) used to help work on the Beavers at Ely. Last I heard, he was working for PHI of the coast of LA.
I used to know a guy from Park Rapids too...Ron Faulk (If my memory still works...it's been 35+ years!) used to have a spray outfit up there. I did my first long cross country through there!
It is pretty country, even in the winter!
Great write up ZZZ... brings some cobwebs out of the old brain!! ;)

People always make fun of Oregon for our full serve law but the joke's on them! I enjoy sitting in my warm car in winter while some kid pumps the gas. 8)

The wife and I are angling for a change...I'd like to get out of the metro area and return to the farm from whence I came. Lake home and float flying sounds just dandy. That's not really a thing in Oregon. Plus, all our good farm land is being turned in vineyards by and for rich people. I just want to make propeller music for my neighbors.
