?Transferring waypoints from 1 gps to another

I have a Garmin 796 and would like too put my waypoints on a friends G496. What is the best/easiest way to do this?
Thanks

Easiest way (not nesc cheapest or fastest) is take them to an avionics shop. I've done this in conjunction with software updates, or acquiring new GPSs. The shop I use always makes a full backup of all user data before servicing GPSs, so in case something goes haywire, all your data is retrievable.

Thanks DP
I've done this before. I've just forgotten exactly how I did it. There was a program, unofficially called a clipboard I think. I just don't remember how to get to it, or what the official name of it was. No cost.
You just opened it. Plugged in your GPS and retrieved the data(waypoints) to it, then unplugged my GPS and plugged in my buddies and put the data from the "clipboard" on to his. Pretty simple once you had the key ingredients.. And you could save the clipboard/data for back up.

Garmin has mapping software that you can use, I think their "basecamp" software is free.

How many waypoints are you talking about?
Can you enter new waypoints in the 496 using the lat/long or UTM?

Hey Terry Thanks. Hey, it's been a while. Guess since you aren't coming this way, I'll try and get up that way next summer.
Eric, I have in the neighborhood of 500. Some will overlap, but much easier to transfer and delete the duplicates.
Thanks
Whee, thanks, I will go check that out.

Whee Thanks. That is what I was looking for. So far, it doesn't seem to recognize the 796. Probably wont get a response from them until sometime tomorrow to see if I can get it to cooperate.

Re: ?Transferring waypoints from 1 gps to another

I wasn't sure if a 796 would work with easyGPS (it is not listed on their website, and the internet says it used .fpl files the same as G430/1000s which do not export user waypoints specifically, only flight plans) but I see it listed in easyGPS.

After using easyGPS with a 296 I had issues the first time I tried to transfer files to an Aera 510 because I did not select the proper GPS. Just to be sure, did you select the aera 796 as the source? (GPS > Receive from GPS. Under GPS Settings open the drop-down menu, select Garmin aera 796 if there, otherwise select [Add GPS/Edit GPS Settings] > Add GPS > Garmin > aera 796 > OK)

Hey Marc
I did not find the aera 796. I will look again in the morning. Assuming that should solve the problem. Thanks for the tip.

I just went in there and tried to add the aera 796 but couldn't find it listed under, marine, aviation or outdoor, where do find it?
Thanks

I used to have good luck pulling track files off my 496 with GPS Babel. Haven't done it in a few years but it supports Garmin serial/USB protocol and waypoints. One issue I've run into though is that my 496 won't support a serial connection on a USB 3.0 port.

I just realized I do not use easyGPS often and the new version does not include any of the aera models. GPS Babel also does not list any aera models in their documentation, either specifically supported or not. That may be an option, or an older version of easyGPS. Check your PMs.

For what it is worth, I found a website that takes routing and creates a flight plan for Garmin 496 GPSs and was updated to work for 796s (because the creator got one). For flight plans, at least, they use the same .fpl format as G950s/G1000s which is a Garmin-specific thing as opposed to the generic .gpx files that the 496 use. I wonder if that is (part) of the reason they are not compatible.

Well, I was finally able to accomplish my mission, and no blood loss. What worked for me was Garmin Basecamp which you can download from Google.
Needed to download a couple drivers from Garmin(they were quite helpful) and then it was pretty easy.
Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the follow-up. I'm happy to see that Basecamp appears to come in a Mac-friendly version also. That was the main obstacle I've bumped into in the past.
