Transporting Floats

I need to get a set of 2440's from Hamilton, Ontario to Winnipeg, Manitoba. Can anyone suggest the best method to get them here (other than attaching them to the plane) They are approximately 10'6" wide so putting them on a flat deck would constitute a wide load unless they were propped up on one side. Other option is to put them up on an angle in an enclosed semi-trailer.

If anyone is aware of a specific company that does this? Any names would be appreciated.

thx.

Re: Transporting Floats

Pull the spreader bars and rigging off, throw it in the car/pickup...put them on top, strap them down and drive home. Nothing to it...done it dozens of times. You need to be pulling all that and inspecting attach points, hardware, etc before they go back on a plane anyway.....especially the saddles for the spreader bars (very common place for corrosion of the aluminum as well as the clamping bolts).

Re: Transporting Floats

I've heard that you want to avoid taking apart the assembley? As it a big beal to get everything set up again and re-rigged? (Being new to floats - I don't know this, I've only heard it)

thx.

Re: Transporting Floats

Just be sure to mark all the tension rods and flying wires so they go back in the same place they came from and the rigging will be OK, And yes they should be taken apart every so often to inspect, clean and lube the parts. Broken down this way they will transport real easy on a rack on a pickup truck or small trailer.

Re: Transporting Floats

John is right, just dissassemble the spreaders and vertical struts, strap em on and go home. Don't worry about reassembly. The only thing that's adjustable is the diagonal brace wires, and you need to re-rig those every time you install the floats anyway. They had to be loosened to get them off the plane, anyway.

And, John is absolutely correct on the note to look carefully at all this stuff for corrosion. I've seen floats that hadn't been disassembled for years, just removed and parked on the bank, and they had serious filiform corrosion in all the blocks. Dissassemble them every couple seasons inspect them, and lube them well with new bolts, etc when they go back on the plane.

Re: Transporting Floats

I have seen boat trailers set up with bunks to accomodate the floats, holds the struts and cables and all the parts. Makes it easy to move your floats to and from each season. Might be worth the investment.

Stinson deal did not get finalized - instead bought a Maule M5-235 with 2440's. Going down next week to Adventure Seaplanes in Florida for my float endorsement so I'm pretty excited.

Re: Transporting Floats

Heres how I moved a set of CAP 3000's from Sudbury to Sault Ste. Marie years ago. I just layed some 2x6s across the box, set the floats on them and strapped them down. Red flags on the rudders. It went well, but it was hard to open the driver's door wide enough to get into the cab.
