TSO Headsets - Yes or No ?

Here is an article for inquiring minds.... :D

There was an interesting recent thread on BCP about using older non-TSO'd avionics on a Cessna 170 that was produced under older CAR-3 regulations.
https://www.backcountrypilot.org/community/forum/latest/non-tso-d-instruments-14484
It got me to wondering what the deal was on TSO vs. non-TSO approved aviation headsets.

Does plug in vs. permanently attached make a difference ? What about ANR vs regular non-TSO headsets? What about TSO approved headsets for IFR or ADSB?

Anyway, I came across this article which had a lot of the answers.

Re: TSO Headsets - Yes or No ?

Maybe someone cares in the Part 121 world. In my 45 years of flogging through the air, I've yet to meet a Fed on the ramp, a check ride, or route check who gave a flying fuck about what I had clamped over my ears.

Of course I started with a ratty overhead speaker that you couldn't understand a word being said and a handheld mic, and graduated to the same pair of DC H10-60's for over 20 years. Maybe they just assumed the headset was grown onto my head.

Smack the mic about four times and yell louder.

It's a wonder we have any hearing left at all. How the hell did we communicate like that.

I fly for a foreign airline. The headsets on our B777's are actually part of the aircraft type-certificate and changing them would be cost prohibitive. Using your own headset is a no no and of course illegal as it will void the type certificate.

Restrictions such as these must be why the B777-EX kit and the 2-week "Build-A-Boeing" program are gaining so much traction. :)
