Typical insurance cost for homebuilt taildragger?

Any ideas?
I am low time right now, and test flying isn't going to help matters. I was expecting upwards of 6% but really have no clear ideas what the going rates are. Obviously the exact ammount depends on your hull value, I guess there is some "band" for the percentage values...?
Ideally I would like to know what to expect before I start approaching brokers.

Typical insurance cost for homebuilt taildragger?

Jon, I don't think you're going to like the answer to this one. #-o My inquiries for insurance with hull coverage on a few different 4-place kitplanes valued at $85K were north of $3,000 per year.

That would only be 3.75%
I'd be thrilled if we get a quote at that rate, that only 2/3rds what I was loosely expecting.... but I am sure others can share their experience. I think Blackrock had mentioned something to me before, but I couldn't find anything on searching.

Rans S6ES, tube and fabric tailwheel, $55,000 hull value, $1220 USD annually. My RV-4 was approximately the same.

Falcon is my agent. 830-257-1000

Private pilot rating flying under Sport Pilot Rules. 450 hrs total, 125 hrs kitfox IV tail wheel. $1,000,000 liability and $20,000 hull. $275 for the liability and $610 for hull totals $875. I keep telling myself I'm under insured on the hull but then maybe it makes me more carefull. That's 3.05% for the hull coverage.

Re: Typical insurance cost for homebuilt taildragger?

I checked on insurance for a BH a while back. The agent said liability for that model with my hours (~300TW) was $1100 plus about 3% of stated hull value for hull coverage. I just used 50k as hull value so $2600 was the quote they gave me.

Don't forget your $2m third party for landing on DoC land...... That adds a few hundy to your premium.

Re: Typical insurance cost for homebuilt taildragger?

I'd like to see some premiums from people who are carrying more hull coverage, like $80K+. Seems like what we've seen thus far is 2-seaters valued less than $50K.

When I was looking last fall I had a 6K quote on 100-120K hull value, but it was from Avemco and they were quite high on all of my quotes. Ended up DQing that plane before I got around to getting quotes from other insurers.

To the insurance pros: Is that pretty standard? Is it also linear up into the six figures?

70,000 hull value

They said should go down to 1,300/yr if I get 100 hours tailwheel in first year

Re: Typical insurance cost for homebuilt taildragger?

I thought I was expensive but I'm on the cheaper side.

'46 Cessna 140
1M liability, 30K hull
$696 a year

Commercial Pilot, Instrument for aircraft and rotorcraft, private rating for seaplane, 1400TT, ~150 Tail Wheel

I was actually cheaper than my dad (8300+ hour private pilot) since I had my instrument rating. I asked about that and the instrument rating seems to drive down costs pretty fast and having time in model helps a lot too.

Just in the process of Insuring my new Bushcaddy L164 taildragger. It's a 4 place 200hp.
Best quote was :
2 Million third party
100,000 hull in motion coverage
$500 deductible, over 10k no deductible.

$2650 taxes inc.

90hr pilot.

Re: Typical insurance cost for homebuilt taildragger?

Cam (Mr Bushcaddy) - that's a good price for 2m liability...

I approached several local brokers, armed with the above information; (in the context of New Zealand, we have a higher rate of attrition for small planes - I'm sure its something to do with our changable weather...) here's what I learned :

4-5 place, 260hp

>110USD agreed value

$1m liability

130hr pilot - low TW time

Coverage for "flight risk" (hull in motion) ranges from 4%-2.7% annual "premium".
Most quotes were about 3.5% with 0.5% refunded annually for "No Claims Bonus". Best was 2.7% with 0.4% refund for bonus, still waiting on confirmation from London. #-o

"Excess" (deductible) in the range of $1000-$2000, but some were prepared to go even lower on the premium with a higher excess.

One wanted to see 5 more hours TW time before coverage.

Here in Alaska, I'm told it's not necessarily the rate of attrition, it's that when a plane has to get retrieved, it's not generally on a nice highway median. Instead it's out in the bush far from infrastructure and services. True of significant portions of NZ too.
