Used Avionics

Looking for an recommended source for used Avionics. Garmin or Dynon set ups. We are looking at new glass dash options but wanted to see if there is a site, not just ebay, to find potentially used options.

Re: Used Avionics

They are adding a double stack to the Sonerai after they do Sportsman, maybe VGs (controversial), and extended baggage.

All the aviation classified sites (barnstormers, Trade-a-plane, controller, etc) have a section for this. There are some used avionics for sale groups on Facebook (beware of piece of crap scammers that post there too) - and then most of the large Avionics shops have used gear they remove and sell - (Pacific Coast Avionics, Sarasota, Gulf Coast Avionics, etc). There are the large salvage companies (Wentworth, etc) and then don't forget your local smaller avionics shops, call around to them and let them know what you are looking for, they may have something they have removed but they don't run websites, etc.

Re: Used Avionics

What he ^^^ said. I've worked with Aerotronics in Billings. They remove a lot of equipment, and if the stuff is worth resurrecting, they can have it yellow tagged for return to service.

That's the question you need to ask: "Has the stuff been yellow tagged?"

No guarantee, but....there is no such thing with used equipment.

Re: Used Avionics

I'll chime in on this conversation to add that as MTV has eluded too a yellow tag is key. Its not a guarantee but does offer some comfort as to function and a fallback position should said item(s) show signs of early onset failure. All that said there is a plethora of very nice "previously enjoyed" avionics available if your one who doesn't need to scratch a "latest & great" itch.

I will add that EI has been spectacular, they support all there products with solid tech support no matter where it was sourced, new used or otherwise.

Re: Used Avionics

Good advice here. Pay special attention to what MTV said.....I'm working through a new panel now and most of my "new to me" avionics I amassed for this project were yellow tagged. However, I bought a vertical compass card from Texas Air Salvage that didn't come with an 8130 or yellow tag and my A&P is giving me some grief over it. I've not been in this game long enough to know if there's a work-around or not, but in hindsight I wouldn't buy anything without an 8130 or yellow tag again. If your A&P is a stickler, it will be a PIA.

Good luck in your search. There's good used glass out there if you beat the streets a little. Also, Garmin stuff will probably be easiest to come by as its been the most widely produced. When I was looking, there were alot of used G500's out there from people upgrading to the G3X.....

Re: Used Avionics

I've gone to a lot of the spots people have noted but here's my best suggestion for used avionics.

1. Search Ebay sold history to get "low" sell prices on working unit, for example a audio panel has the lowest sold price within last 3 months of 500$
2. Add 10-20% that's your price target to buy. [550-600]
3. Look for an item at your price range with a 30 day guarentee
4. Buy it and then test it right away in your airplane

I think that items with a 30 day guarentee demand a bit of a premium, but they are worth it as the sellers will only put that on there if they are almost sure it's working. Anything else, yellow tag or not, may have issues which is why it was removed or being sold. It helps to see "removed for upgrade".

Also with avionics, most of the cost that will sneak up on you is labor and random encoders, magentometers, antennas, expensive stretches of wire, software upgrades/subscriptions etc. Its always way more money than you will expect it to be meaning the hardware actually is not as expensive in the bigger picture.
