Nice thread. I’ve been on one of the Finger Lakes my whole life, including 40+ years of flying; so I’ll weigh in.
We’re roughly in the middle of the region. The lake is 20 miles long with about 70 miles of shoreline. Nice town of about 5,000 at the end of the lake; good schools, services, etc. Some trips of an hour or so are necessary for big box stores, some medical needs, etc. The lakes are surrounded by vineyards, wineries and breweries.
Most of the Finger Lakes places are second homes. For year-rounders this creates a nice ebb and flow between busy and quiet times.
Nice summers, generally low humidity. Winters not too harsh, I’d say an average daily high is in the mid twenties. Virtually no bugs at any time of year.
The flying is beautiful. Fantastic area for floats, lots of options. The Finger Lakes themselves, the bays on Lake Ontario. The Adirondacks are about an hour and a half in a 180. Ski flying is great, yet inconsistent. ( No ice or snow currently). Lots of grass strips, lots of fly-in breakfasts.(til this year) We have a nice seaplane fly-in In September.
Yes, the taxes are high. But again, we have good schools. I’ll leave the affordability question to you and a Zillow search. PM if you’d like more info.
Here’s a piece, with a video, that AOPA did here last year.
