VG's on a Maule

A buddy of mine has a Maule M7, he's thinking of putting a set of Micro VG's on it.
Can anyone here give a before-and-after pirep?
Different airfoils respond differently to mods, so Maule installations only please.
Thanks.

Re: VG's on a Maule

I put the micro VGs on my Maule MX7-180C after flying the plane for 3 years without them. My plane has Maule's "universal" wing, so the results should match for an M7. I don't choose to fly the plane any slower on approaches, but I do notice more roll authority at low speeds. I did not take any hits to my top speed, but Maules are not fast planes to begin with. I made the change to give myself more margin for errors at slow speed, short field landings and they seem to do that beautifully. I'd buy them again in a heartbeat. By the way, I bought my micro VG kit at the NW Aviation conference and tradeshow and got a significant discount. Your buddy may want to hold off until then to get his.

I'm curious as to what airfoil the Maule wing uses?
I tried googling it, but found several different answers ranging from "same as a Cub", to "USB",
to "2412" (which is what the cessna wing uses).

Re: VG's on a Maule

Seems VGs are mostly the same story

Pro Improves low speed handling

Doesn’t improve much of anything else for outside of some GW STCs

Con Got to buy install and paint them and they occasionally fall off

Do you feel you need better low speed roll axis control?

I believe Maule employs the USA 35B mod airfoil from tip to root
Never painted any of the VG's I have installed...Cubs, Scout's, Cessna's, Beaver
Have had tail VG's bent over from rock impact and popped one loose due to a fuel can while overwing refueling but have never had them "occasionally fall off"
Yes, more low speed roll authority is a good thing, sign me up for more when available

“Popped loose”, “fall off”, tomato tomato

Good tool for more roll authority when it’s needed

If you ever decide or need to use wing covers, or broom off snow, be prepared to cuss a lot.

Hmmm, never had an issue with covers and VG's in over 30 years and thousands of flight hours while employing wing covers (even on the high wing of the Beaver), perhaps due to my height and the dowel rod "tools" I made to lay/slip the covers on.

Kilo; Ahh, No, its not tomato/toMAto...losing one VG due to brute force impact over thousands of hours is much different than "occasionally fall off"

Well if the VG aint there anymore it ain’t there anymore lol

I’ve been flying for half the time as you, big and small planes with VGs, IMO I like them in the air but I don’t like them in the hangar, if that makes sense

from a VG manufacturer

Cleaning

they include extras for when one ends up coming off (for whatever reason)

Apparently they REQUIRE you to keep the replacement kit and glue with the aircraft at all times

Been debating adding them to my skywagon
