Webbing knots.

I have some 4-1/2 wide webbing that I want to use to sling some wings hanging leading edge down in a moving truck. I had always used narrow straps with hooks and ratchets in the past but this stuff looks like a much better deal. Now short of sewing loops and hooks how to join the ends over the side rails?. My initial thought was water knots but with the width of this stuff it might have questionable results? Fold in half and a water knot is the next idea?

Melt some holes in the webbing with a soldering iron for some bolts and washers.

Re: Webbing knots.

Use the water knot. It's surprisingly simple and strong. I used it for the 4" wide webbing suspending my wings from my hangar joists.

Something new every day:

Iv'e known it as a ring bend - sling knot - and swami belt knot from my rock climbing instructions days. [-o<
My Explorer Scout leader was an ex merchant marine. Thought he taught us ALL of them. :?
He even made us learn to tie a one-handed bowline behind our back while hanging from the other hand.
But - "Water Knot" is all new to me after all these decades

That's a really cool link! I was part of a technical rescue team at my work place years ago and we did a whole bunch of ropework. I'd forgotten all but a few so it's nice to see most of them there for future reference!

Re: Webbing knots.

Water knot is the standard for webing as far as I know, but an overhand knot with both ends together is also good, though it does not lie flat.

If you've tied a swami belt you've tied a water knot. Unless, i suppose, you didn't use webbing for your swami belt.

Very timely thread, by coincidence I was wondering last night if I could still tie a one handed bowline. Buddy of mine showed me how to wrap the rope around your torso and tie a one handed bowline for helicopter rescue situations. I always thought that was one of the coolest knot uses.

The guys that tie packs on horses also have some amazing knot knowledge.

Re: Webbing knots.

Frost knot might be good, especially if you tie it close to the wing, then the wing won't move around like it might if it's hanging in a large loop

Any packer worth his salt knows how to use one or more variations of the diamond hitch.
Google it up sometime- a bit complicated but works great.

Re: Webbing knots.

This thread title caught my eye, as I recently for the first time in the three years I've been packing it in the airplane, got to use my 150+' long length of 3/4" mule tape.

I helped a neighbor get his snow machine in working order after it sat for a couple years (bad E-10, who knows, tore the carbs apart, put them back together and it started). Seeing how he's always good for a shot or a beer, I thought I'd jump on it and deliver it, and promptly got it stuck. I got the Warn Winch A and the mule tape out, figuring if nothing else this would be a good test of the stuff. I do remember hearing some kind of special knot was required, my test would be using only the knots I use, square and bowline pretty much for everything.

To my surprise they both worked, with no slippage or apparent weakening of the webbing, though I only pulled 1,000' lbs, the max the winch can do. Better yet, the knots were easy to undo. "Regular" knots would be good enough for my plane rescue if/when I need the stuff I suppose, it was a good real world test.

I got the snow machine stuck three more times, still on my property, it finally took the Kubota and some harsh words to get that damn thing off my property, and yes I know you have to lean to turn them, but I couldn't get that thing to turn to save my life. At one point, pulling down hill with the mighty Kubota (I love that thing) I had a knot slip, a square knot, probably double the earlier pull of 1 K, real hard whatever it was. So I guess on second thought I'll learn the correct knot. The next day it was a pleasure to have the rudder control in the ski plane, what that snow machine needed!

Re: Webbing knots.

Always nice to learn something new in the knot world. Years ago when I took a sailing course, one whole session was on various marine-oriented knots. I bet I remember maybe 2 of them, but I can tie a pretty good hurricane knot to keep the airplane tied down, and square knots work pretty well to tie 2 pieces of rope together. Otherwise, I'm pretty knot headed but not too good at the nuances of knots.
