TUF guy, perhaps you should lurk more and post less. This forum is a treasure trove of knowledge and can be a great tool, but insulting one of the most knowledgable and respected members of this and other well know flying forums is not going to win you any friends. Think of it as a personal PR campaign...

I have been a lurker on this site for quite some time and a registered user for a short time. This is only my second post. The chemistry that the majority of this group share, I find to be almost family like. I greatly appeciate the information, humor, wit, wisdom, and respect you folks share. MTV, you sir are a class act, as demonstrated by your response to twoupfront. It is my hope that you don't withhold your wisdom from this site because of one turd in this punch bowl. Twoupfront, I was once told years ago that it is better to sit back quietly and look like a fool, than to open your mouth and prove it.

As far as I know the company has not filed the NTSB report yet. (occurred on 7/7, ten working days to file report) There was enough damage to the aircraft to make it an accident. In addition I'm pretty sure you have to report a turbine engine failure (I'm too lazy to look that up right now). The plane has been helicoptered back to TKA. In all fairness to the company and the pilot it would be best to get the info direct from the NTSB report rather than some anonymous speculating knucklehead (me) on the web. The report should be out pretty soon.

NTSB report # ANC12CA070


907pilot and AKflyer had it right. The front seat passenger pulled the emergency fuel shut off. The fuel shut off in the Turbine Beaver is the same as the Piston Beaver. Located on the right side of the center pedestal next to the passenger's left leg. Down is on, up is off. In the Piston Beaver the lever somewhat protected by the oil filler neck. No oil filler neck in the Turbine Beaver but there's really no way for the passenger to accidentally kick it with his leg or foot. I didn't talk to the pilot but I did talk to the chief pilot. My understanding is that the passenger had a camera bag on the floor. When the passenger picked up the camera bag the strap snagged on the fuel shut off lever and things got quiet. The ceiling was low and they were only about 1000' AGL so there wasn't much time for a restart. The pilot put the skis down and landed in a muskeg bog. One wing clipped a tree and there was some damage to the stab and elevator. The landing was soft enough that it didn't set off the ELT so good job on the pilot's part. The worst part of the whole episode was that apparently after the fuel was shut off it was turned on again which seized the gas generator. OUCH! That was expensive. I didn't hear if that was covered by the insurance company or not.

All the pilots in our company that fly Piston Beavers and have started briefing passengers about the fuel shut off lever as well as prohibit bags on the floor in front. De Havilland changed the fuel shut off from an up/down lever to a push on, pull off knob in the Otter so I wonder if they recognized the potential problem in the design.

So, uhmm, does that mean that 2upfront was right with his guess? Hmmmm. I have to say it seemed like a little over-zealous on some of the responses to his post. It's not like people don't speculate about causes every single time one of these accidents gets posted. I'm not saying that speculation is appropriate or not but I don't think we need to attack people as a result.

I don't think he was being attacked for speculating.... He was being attacked for being a douchebag, he always seems to pick a fight and argue whenever he posts. There was a thread on here a little before this one was first started, and it went on for several pages of arguing back and forth before it finally got locked. Twoupfront was the main culprit and I think he left a bad taste in everyone's mouth after that.

Yep that was pretty much my take also. He didn't make a good impression on previous threads.

Interesting...that control on every Beaver I've flown was safetied, and would take a pretty hard yank to get it shut off.....someone REALLY wanted that camera bag bad, and really had their head up their butt.

There's a reason many 135 operators don't allow pax in front seats unless absolutely necessary.

Still good on the pilot for getting it parked without hurting anyone.

Not trying to get this topic to far off track but there is a homebuilt forum I no longer frequent due to the same type of attitude from a member that posts there. I am not sure if this is the same guy but that poster is from the Netherlands and I am thinking he is an engineer of some sort. He is a consistent 'know-it-all' and really irritating, his replies are, 99% of the time, trying to start an argument. Guys like this do a forum NO good!!
