The thread title kind of says it all. What aviation oriented magazines do you get/read and why?

My current favorite is Kitplanes.

I also get the AOPA magazine and EAA's very disappointing Sport Aviation.

None. Occasionally flip through Kitplanes if I'm at the book store and they have it. Plane and Pilot was ok, but haven't seen it around here for a while - is it still published? I live in the DC area and general aviation is not a big interest here so I've noticed that the aviation magazines are scarce on the shelves. Don't have much use for Flying since I doubt I'll ever own or fly a $12,000,000 jet. I wish there was a magazine geared to the interests of the average private pilot. I'd buy it. Heck, I might even subscribe.

Pilot, Sport Aviation, Plane and Pilot, Water Flying, Flying (comes free with membership in an organization-wouldn't pay for it), Kit Plane, and my current favorite: Flight Journal.

I get AOPA and EAA, but usually just toss them. I wish one could subscribe to an organization at a discount and not get their mags and other junk mail (AOPA).

AOPA has done a better job of making their magazine more relevant to the average pilot...not so many articles about jets and the like...they are also a bit better when it comes to the "off the beaten path" flying. However they are still full of ads. I like EAA as well. Those are the only 2 I feel like reading I used to like plane and pilot but we dot have a book store around anymore and I don't really care to subscribe.

Avaitors Bulletin , trade a plane, AMT rag, Cessna Pilots Assoc. Rag , R/C model rag , that's about it for me. Used to get aopa rag but got tired of there crap about million dollar 172 spam cans with no brain dorks on there great adventure .

Trade a plane, and this site . Pretty much all the airplane mags suck.Oh , sometimes I will look at water flying.

I have a no-magazine AOPA membership & it costs me $25. I do get all the other membership benefits, including the junk mail.

I like Kitplanes and AOPA magazine. Don't get or buy any others except the disappointing Sport Aviation. When they brought J. Mac Maclellen onboard I could see the handwriting on the wall. He shouldn't be involved with any publication associated with sport aviation as he knows nothing about it.

I believe if you renew over the phone to the EAA, you can option out of the magazine. I've been considering this.

In order of satisfaction:

1. Pilot Getaways. Good stuff. I keep these and bring 'em out when time for a vacation.
2. Air&Space. Good variety & good stories. I used to keep them but I do read cover-to-cover.
3. Flight Journal. Fun read. My kids (7 & 9) also love the warbirds -> they get 'em when I'm done.
4. Light Plane Maintenance. I find myself re-reading articles based on need/curiosity - occasionally learn something. I save these.
5. AOPA. It's OK - hit or miss relevance for me monthly. Trash when done.
6. Sport Aviation. It's OK - hit or miss relevance for me monthly. Trash when done.
7. Vintage Airplane. Good. I keep these.
8. Plane & Pilot. QUICK read for only the good stuff. "One-sitter".
9. Water Flying. Comes with the membership. OK.
10. Sport Aerobatics. Comes with the membership. OK.
11. Flying - in "run off" mode. Too much focus on unaffordable new-iron. Seems to be targeted at the newsstand, non-pilots, dreamers. IMO.

I need to cull the herd a bit but some are so cheap that I bought multi-year subscriptions (P&P, Flying, etc); some come along for the ride for the cause (EAA, Vintage, Sport Aerobatics, Water Flying, AOPA).

I used to keep all of them...my wife prevailed and I've found that I don't miss many of them.

1)Flypast: Great quality UK based magazine. Covers a range of classics. Mostly military, but great vintage stuff as well.

2)Australian Aviation: Used to have it delivered but exchange rate makes electronic version affordable (wife's from Oz)

3)Air Forces Monthly: Still can't get the kid who wanted to fly fighter out of me..

4)Combat Aircraft Monthly: same reason.

5) EAA Sport Pilot. Glossy pictures attract me.

6)AOPA Pilot

7)Water Flying



I spend long long hours traveling in a aluminum tube back and forth for my job, so any and all of the above... Or whatever is on the newsagents shelf if I am really bored.

1) AOPA: They have to appeal to a wide range of pilots/aircraft owners so there magazines are pretty hit or miss. Some I hold on to (loved the article on the Ford Trimotor and Husky), and others are in my hands for less than an hour.

2)Sport Pilot: Again hit or miss and I keep a few that have articles I like in them.

3)Vintage Pilot: I love this mag mostly because I love pretty much every aircraft they do an article on. I keep all of these at my hangar. Too bad it is so thin.

That is about it. Everything else I get is because I see a plane on the cover that I have an interest in. I have a few editions of Cessna Owner and Piper Owner because I have or have flown the planes they are writing about. I used to get Air & Space but I honestly don't care about the space aspect at all.

No one has mentioned it but like "aviation consumer"

No ads and pretty good write ups without all the bs
