A flapped Citabria list below $80K has been posted on Bstormer.

Dang, I just helped a widow sell this active, 1975 M5, over TBO - running great w/Blackstone receipts, for 45K..

I would own if I could secure another hangar anywhere near SLC... but it went to a good home.

I guess the idea of this thread was to seek guidance/recommendation on types. These barnstormers and Craigslist listings will expire after a bit, and the meaning lost.

Why do you think a MX-7-180 is a good choice for the price point? What do those weigh empty, anyway? Is Maule hull coverage still through the roof?

I personally think it’s interesting that basically the same types are always the bargains, until the market shifts and they become popular because that’s all normal people can afford. What fills the gap then?

I'll cease & desist any further Bstormer point outs.

I lean towards a flapped Citabria or Scout if one can be found. I believe they are, in properly trained hands a worthy option to a Cub/Maule/Husky with some known limitations.

MX7 is a great plane, lots of interior space and a good sized aircraft, personally I’d get the smaller M4 I posted as the other engine is TBO, not a deal breaker but it’s something on the horizon.

Insurance wise I’d give BWI insurance a call, tell them you’re shopping different planes and don’t have a tail number yet.

Bargain to expensive is just when enough people start buying them as a bargain, supply and demand -> more people look for them -> only X of them -> prices go up

As others said a citabria is a great choice, I don’t think you need to spend the money on one with flaps and everything, a basic citabria will get in and out of most anyplace you’re going to go, so shy of buying it to win STOL competitions where your performance is measured to the inch (gigitty), or having extra money to spend, it’s not really needed if you just want to experience most all the backcountry spots

Good point on the supply/demand. In my opinion, you'll always have the J3's, Citabrias, 120/140's, etc. in that price range. But outliers come up - something that far exceeds the "basic criteria" although may have a certain drawback. High time, missing logs, whatever else. The outliers are where you get the bang for buck (or a lemon).

I shared the Scout listing because I have a few years in that specific plane, and it's an awesome plane for the cost. It has been flown regularly and insurance is cheap. It would be a great buy for someone ready to purchase, assuming it checks out to their standards. The scout was an outlier based on airframe hours, but was perfect for me.

The Maule above is an outlier, but it's a desirable configuration and looks to be in pretty good condition. Operating cost is high - insurance will be steep, and it's thirsty for gas, but it far exceeds basic criteria.

I thought it was a great find. Nice looking airplane.

As someone here once said (mtv maybe?): "Find a plane with a runout engine and negotiate—then at least you know exactly what you've got."

I know most people frown on 172's due to being nose wheel, but with the right set up, they can be an awesome 2- person quasi bush type. My old one was just sold last week and with the Sportsman cuff, fine pitched prop, it could easily do under 300' T/O and landings. Zzz, I can text them to you if you want.

On that note, there’s a Cessna 175 with an o-360 and CS on barnstormers right now for “$87k accepting offers.” Better than a 172 in many ways. If Cessna had originally put that engine in the 175 instead of the GO, the 172 would be just some obscure model they made back in the 50’s.
