Re: What's the most unlikely plane to go into Johnson Creek?

Can a Cessna One Hundred Fifty, 5's all around, with a STOL kit operate in and out of Johnson Creek okay? Have been to Moose Creek, but not to Johnson Creek. :)

Hell yeah, you could damn near land it across the runway there.

I would say no problem at all. I've seen C-140s in there. Just fly light and early and you'll have no problem.

Like Rob says... Go early, go light, and you'll have a fun trip.

I had a Cessna 120 long time ago that I took into a lot of the ID strips. First with the C85 engine that was in the thing when I bought it, and later an O-200. It packed me, the dog, and enough camp gear to stay out comfortably for a few days.

Considering the slightly shorter runway and higher altitude. I bet ya the newer 737 with the HB turbo fan engines lightly loaded, could do JC with ease. I remember seeing these come in to Hope BC back in the seventies.

Sweet. I see it had the engine deflectors on it.

Re: What's the most unlikely plane to go into Johnson Creek?

The thrust reverser was of what was called a clam shell design. An asymmetric retraction of these during an abort was to cause a fatal disaster in Cranbrook BC back in 78

Edit. Ok I see you may be talking about those thingies hanging from the inlet nacelles. Did not notice that.

Re: What's the most unlikely plane to go into Johnson Creek?

Yup, they're air deflectors to prevent FOD. They last ones I saw used were on Alaska Airline's 737-200's when they were still flying into gravel at Red Dog Mine and down at Unalakleet. Big old air nozzles to keep anything from getting sucked in.

Shared Services still has them on a couple 737s they fly to the slope. The 2 older ones still have the gravel guard kits on them.

on one of my trips back in the late 90's I was parked next to a MU2 at JC..short winged son of a gun....don't know how it will effect your landing but you might want to consider when and if the caretakers put the sprinklers on ... one since it softens the turf and another since it halves the runway width....

And, what they refer to as the "ski" on the nose gear is also an essential component of the gravel kit.....it defects gravel coming off the nose tire Way from the engines.

I spent a lot of time in the back of those old -200 Combis.....

Me too. Noisy as hell in the back, much nicer up front in the jumpseat. And man oh man, those Wein and Alaska based Alaska Airline 737 drivers flew those airplanes like Super Cubs. I loved riding with those guys.

Re: What's the most unlikely plane to go into Johnson Creek?

NAC still runs the gravel kit on N321DL and N322DL. They routinely operate on gravel runways like St. Mary's (PASM). Man, what a dust cloud they kick up on departure.

By the way, summer is over here. No more blossoms on the fireweed, two frosts, and at least 100 geese eating something (grass, maybe?) on the approach end of runway 28 at Aniak this afternoon. Time to start looking for the box of winter gear.

Glad we aren't the only ones that have hit fall here in Alberta. We had a good frost that finished off the garden, and the leaves are turning like crazy. Geese are flocking up and making my trigger finger itchy. And its not even September yet...

I haven't had as much summer as I'd like, but I'm certainly not dreading winter. It's a pretty neat season here.

Now back to the subject of uncommon planes going into JC.

A few still do. That describes my Adak departure last year to a T. 8)

Re: What's the most unlikely plane to go into Johnson Creek?

To get back to the original subject, I believe that Johnson's Flying Service used to go in and out of JC with their Tri Motors. That's not an over powered airplane, by the way, and if one pukes.......

Re: What's the most unlikely plane to go into Johnson Creek?

The bulliten board at JC used to contain some neat old photos of planes that had come in there. Some on skis. I wonder what happened to them when they redid the bulliten board.
