I HAVE A LIGHT SPEED.....AFTER CALLING THE FACTORY..OR WHAT I THOUGHT WAS THE "FACTORY" I FOUND THAT THEY ARE MADE IN CHINA.... I INFORMED THE PERSON ON THE LINE THAT IF I HAD KNOWN THAT I WOULD NOT HAVE BOUGHT THEM.
I DO FIND THEM TO BE A PAIN IN THE A.. WITH THE CORD BEING TOO LONG AND THE BATTERIES NEEDING REPLACEMENT MORE
OFTEN THEN I THINK THEY SHOULD.. I FLY ABOUT 3 TO 4 HOURS PERDAY AND GET ABOUT A WEEK OUT OF THEM..

I have tried a few fancy ANR headsets, all in the $700 and up range, and wasn't impressed enough to switch. I've still got my first (relatively) cheap $250 DC headset. 4000 hours, 3 sets of earseals and one new microphone later, it's still my favorite. After 8 hours in the air in various 300hp 1970's air taxi jalopies, with a set of ipod earbuds under them, sunglasses on and chewing gum most of the time, it feels like I'm wearing a vise on my head. I've also never had to worry that the things were going to fall apart even in -50F and there's no batteries to change and no pile of spaghetti plugged in to the intercom.

The only reason I can see for not using ANR headsets is when your engine starts coming apart you might be able to hear it. Of course any time I'm over water or mountain peaks I hear noises that I never heard before anyway.

In my opinion the ability to distinguish anything abnormal, or engine roughness, is not masked by ANR. There's nothing special in those low end bass notes of the hum that are many more indicative of trouble. I've never stuck a valve or had an engine come apart though-- I'd expect real problems to be felt in your feet and butt.

They call the new noises over nasty terrain "Automatic Rough," and they are generated by anxiety.

Here is some info on headsets. I work with a Bose X everyday. They work well for me in lots of different airplanes. Makes life much more enjoyable flying long distances in the Maule. XM passes the time. Flight instruction is communication. I cant tell you how much better it is with these headsets. I just bought some on ebay. The last one, I got for 299.00. Gotta be careful to get the right model. Some are two plug with battery. Some are for a hardwired panel mount application. They have a 6 pin or Lemo plug. Some are for helicopters with a single plug.
Comfort and clear communication. Makes all of the difference.
