Whelen landing light (PMA) water ingress

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Whelen landing light (PMA) water ingress

After flying in rain showers (for a few hours in British Columbia) water was inside my:

* PMA Whelen PAR 36, 71486

Not a happy camper at the moment! Anybody have an issue too?

Looks like it needs a drain hole! You must have been going through a lot of rain.

Yup I see that all the time. It's because yours is upside down. The water could not flow out the check valve.... Just kidding.
The Navajo fogs them up all the time. They never have quit working but I see the same deal all the time. You can take the three screws off and remove the lens. They can be dried out that way. There is a rubber seal on the back and I don't think it seals super well obviously. Edit- Also the lenses crack around these screw holes letter water in.
The Cessnas never have fog or water but they are behind the wing leading edge.
The lights do have a good warranty and sure they would exchange it if you wanted to go that route.

I have seen this before also... :cry:

I know it doesn't help your situation, but if anyone is looking for LEDs, Aeroleds have a much better unit all around.

Re: Whelen landing light (PMA) water ingress

"Whelen" nomenclature is inverted. I did not think that would affect it's water resistance? Should I orient the label imprint right side up? Should that make a difference?

Thank you guys for the input.

Aeroleds were not PMA when I got the aircraft (experimental only)! Glad to know they are now.

Bugs me a little seeing the condensation.

But, OK. Thanks for the information. I will not placard it "INOP" !!

Are you flying to Catalina again? I'll be in Rolling Hills on 06-AUG.
