Today I only "flew" the lawnmower, but I still got an aeronautical treat.

A red tail hawk flew over at only 100 AGL, then hit a thermal and within a minute was well over 1000 feet. Next thing, it folded it's wings and dove. It took less than ten seconds to get back down. He didn't go clear to the ground for a kill; I think he was just a natural born aviator out for some fun.

Doug Bar

Hey Wup- Kay wants to know why it took 3 hours to go 15 minutes from Joseph. I couldn't answer her satisfactorily. Nice photos.

It's alive!!!

Well the ice finally melted out from the front of the hanger so I went out and after some argument got "Charlie" to fire up. We didn't really go anywhere just shot some T&Gs. That ole Stinson sure flies nice.

Hollow Top

Yesterday I flew the Super Cub to Hollow Top to do some shooting. A friend came to meet me in his 180. Fairly good day overall after a lot of wind in previous days.
Also made some intermediate stops at Sluders, Picabo and some farm fields to visit with customers (thank you Bushwheels!) on the way.

If you're not scarin' yourself, you're not scarin' the crowd!

South

Flew to Carson City, trying to get into Turlock, CA. However weather and wind won out and made as far as Carson City. Minden, NV had snow showers and real crappy weather. Landed at Carson, wind 350 at 15G28, rwy 27,used curtesy car, grabbed a burger at the Casino and checked weather at the FBO. Gave up the trip to Turlock. Winds in the San Joaquin valley were gusting in the mid to upper 40s. High Pressure about 3 hours behind the forecasted time. El Aero Services a great FBO. Nice car for a loaner. Things fueled and ready after I got back from lunch. Ground out the return trip with 95 to 110 knot ground speeds. To much to ask for tail winds both directions. 5 hours on the tach. All in all a good day. 8)

Robert "Bub" Wright, aka Skylane, passed away in November of 2011. He was a beloved community member and will be missed.

Flew home from Talkeetna tonight, already we have more daylight than the lower 48. Departed about 8:35pm and flew direct to the Eldridge Glacier, then flew about half-way up before turning around. Pushed the throttle in and climbed at about 1200 fpm (about 0 OAT and a climb prop - love it!) to exit the glacier and fly direct north instead of coming all the way back down to the river. Flew home and touched down about 9:50pm, still had time to unload the plane and drive up the hill before dark.

This is not a destination but i went out tonight to try out my sportsman STOL put about an hour on it and was verry impresed it doesent make it imposible to stall or spin but it feels rock solid at 55-60 on final and with full flaps and power i can land at 37mph. the celing was to low to do secondary spins and nohanded spin recovery but it stals gracefully and almost recovers its self next i plan to install VGs.

tricycles are for little girls

A couple of days ago I took my wife and daughter into Red’s, in NE Oregon. What a great place to fly. There was nobody else up there. We took some photos and just relaxed for a couple of hours. Here are a couple photos from the flight. I hope you enjoy.

God forbid we should ever be twenty years without a rebellion. ***Thomas Jefferson***

Where did you fly today?

I finally got some more seat time in Charlie, I took my wife to Juneau for a movie and a meal, We had lunch at the Baranoff Hotel and then went and saw Shreck the third. Meal and movie just OK but the day and the company were unbeatable. We saw six whales on the way down and four on the way back plus hundreds of steller sea lions massed up to feed on the eulachon. My lake is finally thawed out so we can get to work but my dock is still frozen in and sitting high on the bank. This was one of those rare glorious days that make up for all the cloud and fog.

That would be anti-buzz super high tech space filler. I think that it costs around a grand a foot, but there are lots of samples around to try for free.

I flew. Alone, for the first time since becoming an airplane owner.
It was fun, and nearly as exhilarating as my first solo many years ago.
I did 3 hrs of dual yesterday with an instructor from Ashland. Tim Stewart is an excellent instructor, highly recommended for students of any caliber.
We even flew into Beagle Sky Ranch near Medford, OR and I put a few dents in my elevator leading edge. :x But hey, that's dirt flying.
So today I hopped out of bed and headed for the aerodrome and put another hour in my logbook. Gotta hang it up for this week and head back to Portland.

Woo hoo!
Still have some disconcerting engine vibration...gonna dig into that soon and tweak the timing, replace engine mounts, and then dynamically balance the prop if the first 2 don't remedy the situation.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

The highly technical and sophisticated cardboard is actually a fully automatic GNS dimmer. There is glareshield lighting right above the 430 and at night with the lights on, the 430 goes automatically to full bright and is really distracting. So I engineered the auto-dim. Just another proud moment in Dave's World.
