Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

It's a sensor package, visible and thermal with a laser rangefinder/designator. I'm a scout, so it's mounted up there to enable masking behind stuff and seeing over with minimal exposure.

Here's an up close (google searched):

That looks like it would be a very useful moose scouting rig. Can you bring it to SE this September? :D
I'm pretty sure Fish and Wildlife would confisticate that helicopter if they see it circling out over Runamuck drive. That might take some pretty convincing double talk to skate out of.

Did you guys fly over Smith Rock in the morning? There was a plane or two flying low doin' the sight seeing thing while I was working over there... maybe it was you? Since I doubt there where that many people out doing the VFR thing today in Central Oregon...

No it wasn't me. I saw a bunch of the same planes from my house not too far from Smith though. I believe they were doing a young eagles event giving tours that morning and that's part of their route. I agree the weather wasn't perfect, but doable. We flew in about 15 minutes of rain heading East toward Burns. Did you fly or drive over? It looks pretty nice out there this morning! And I'm headed to work :( . Have fun climbing and be safe! (Or when you say "working over there" does that mean something else??)

I had to drive over unfortunately... oh well! Hey thanks, I actually work as a climbing guide at Smith so it is kinda nice to get paid to hang in the park. Yesterdays group was hell, but today we had some nice cute WSU girls so that was nice :) and yes the weather was much nicer, but the wind didn't help the after work fly fishing. Are you out of Bend, Redmond or Madras? I fly into Redmond a lot during the summer for work, don't know any pilots in Central Oregon, so I'm always game to make friends and go flying. I actually just got permission from the BLM to land on the road by the canal near the Marsupials area of Smith Rock... so fly in hiking or climbing?

Sweet gig! And I don't know where you're fishing but there's a salmon fly hatch on the deschutes right now!

I live in Terrebonne and we moved the planes from Redmond to Prinenille last year. It's about a 20 minute drive, five minute flight. I'd love to connect with you one of these days and do some flying! Let me know when. From the sounds of it though, you'll have to be the tour guide :D . Speaking of which, are you talking about the canal road at the base of Burma (the Marsupials)? First of all well done getting permission from the BLM to land there, and second of all let me know for sure when you're going to do it because I definately want to be there to watch and video your landing! That's tight if it's where I'm thinking!

I'm not much for climbing but I do mountain bike at the rock. Here's a pic I took last week:

My favorite route was always "5 Gallon Buckets." It's one of the easiest but most fun in those big huecos and bolts every 10 feet.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Anahim, Nimpo Lake, via Bute Inlet and Homathko. Came back the next day, and as you can see from my SPOT trail the weather wasn't as good. A weak stomach and bladder wife just doesn't let you try those 'drawing on an inside straight' mountain passes.

I need NimpoCub to tune me up on how the homeboys get in and out. BTW, Homathko strip is in good condition and you can book into the B&B run by Chuck Birchell (of National Geographic fame).

Wayne the airport caretaker at Anahim says none of the old Oregon crowd is flying up there these days. Saw only two floaters on Nimpo Lake - down from about 50 twenty years ago. Big smear on the ramp where a Cessna 205 was doing a run up last week and a gust of wind (more like a dust devil) picked the tail up and flipped it on its nose. Gets windy there.

Re: Where did you fly today?

The blue-top Cub on the N end is me. Where'd you see the other one? A white Cub a couple docks over is Terry Brandt but he went back yesterday (to Ark) to fetch a couple more antiques for his Hood River museum. (Cub in hangar)
Whad'ja mean "tune me up on how the homeboys get in and out"? On wheels? Did ya see the 1600+' strip up behind? If you live on the coast you know how to fly the mtns! :)
BIG drop in traffic from the PNW the last few years. Hassle factors they claim. Still plenty of Ak traffic but Wayne doesn't "see" the float traffic, they stop for juice @ the S end @ Wilderness Rim.
The old C205 was getting tiddled up for his summer excursion to his NWT gold mine. Local AME parked it downwind for a runup & held the "steering wheel thingie" full back, and yep, Wayne said it flipped right away. Went for a peek & not many reuseable parts on it. Went over on the left wing, prop, & tail. Even the fuse got kinked pretty bad. He's worried about getting insurance payout since the AME has no PPL.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Had 45min of light left today. Went exploring up the Umpqua river. I have never seen a bear out of the tree cover here in Oregon, this was pretty cool!

The Iphone shot while flying is really poor, but look at the part of photo that is partially in focus, and you can see the black blob that is the bear.

Hells Yeah! Maybe the MacBeans can shoot us going out to climb the Grand Teton, or cragging at City of Rocks, bouldering at Ibex or the Happy Boulders near Bishop, or maybe even french-freeing the welded tuff at Smith Rocks.

Nice work! I have skied that NW aspect your looking there from the top...(12-8 o clock). You could land a plane on the mid way glacier no problem.

Wow yeah, what day was that? All the rock on Illumination Rock, Steel Cliffs etc was bare of snow. Looks like it melted off pretty quick!
