Re: Where did you fly today?

Northbound again to Gods country.
Spent saturday night at Chelan, Sunday at McKenzie. Shot the trench today , absolutely astounding Wx for the first half, then down to zero-zero in the pass just before terminus. Sweetie says [-X t o scud so we sought refuge and fuel at Ft Ware
Those that have been, would say I probably would have faired better challenging the Wx  Nev the less the natives played very nicely today, and we succeeded in getting a little gas with our water
Sitting on the west end (away from friendly fire) we spied a gaggle of cubs come in and top off. Recognized Fedex Lous smith cub, but don't think I knew the other two.
With any Wx cooperation tomorrow should find us overnighting in the Wrangells 8)

Re: Where did you fly today?

[img][img][/img][/img]A few years ago, I landed this side gig flying for our local county forest service/Oregon dept. of forestry. So in the summer when I'm not at my day job at the municipal fire dept., I can usually be found doing time in one of the two planes we operate with (182 or Super Cub).
In the off season they (like us) prefer not to let them sit, so they have us fly them for an hour every couple of weeks.
Yesterday was great day to exercise the SC, and since they didn't have a REO to go with me, I grabbed the camera as I went out the door.
There she is, just waiting to go work.
Image
Departed Roseburg, and climbed up to check out the tops of the overlying broken overcast while all the temps came up to their normal operating range.
Image
Then circled down into the canyon to check out the neighborhood.
Image
Image
Then popped out of the canyon and began to follow the river and start the neighborhood grass circuit.
Image
Image
First stop, Felt field. I used to base my 170 here before three friends and I joined up and built a cooperate hangar together at RBG .

Image
I miss it out here in the summer!
Image
Then it was off to the next stop. In the center of the pic you can see a flattened off mountain top with two hangars on the left.
Image
This is called Hilltop, and is owned by a couple friends who are so generous to let me use it.
On final.
Image
Image
Image
Image
It's like a little piece of back country in my own back yard.
Image
Image
Image
Image
Then it was off to the next piece of grass. A private airpark called Umpqua, where a couple friends live.
Image
I made a quick landing, turned around at the end of the runway and took off. If I get out, it usually ends up being a breakfast visit. I'll save that for when I'm not in my "company car".
Image
All in all, not a bad morning at my second job. :D
Now if we don't get any fires here while we're in JC, I'll have to do it all again when we get home. How sad is that?

Sticknrudder,
What's the secret handshake that allows a guy to land at that awesome beachfront strip?

Hotrod150,
No, nothing that cool.
It's a transmitter that's part of a system required by all forest service a/c called spider tracks. It puts our current location on the computer screens of our office people. They call it "flight following". It's kind of comforting cause I find myself deep down in the Cascades, or the mountains between I-5 and the coast that I used to never cross in my own plane unless I was up at the flight levels.
It's nice to know that if I have an engine out, they'll have me home for dinner. Some times when were bored, we try to sky write the dispatchers names and messages on there screens.
I would however like to try an AOA indicator on this thing. It has VG's on the wings, under the tail, and strakes in front of the HS. It goes from slow flight to falling out of the sky in a stall like nothing I've ever experienced. And if you stall it much out of coordination and don't let up back pressure on the stick, it spins you upside down before the nose drops through into a more normal spin. That point was made to me on my interview check ride. My chief pilot had mentioned his concern several times about us slow flying this thing, and I kind of brushed him off. Now I'm a firm believer. It's all good though. Much more enjoyable than my day job.

Checked out a couple more strips in the Bookcliffs in eastern UT.
No secret handshake required. :D

clippwagon wrote:This wasn't where I flew today but it was recently and I finally found the time to sit down and do a quick write up on the trip. As some of you may recall I sold the Clipper (PA-16) at the end of last year and have been in the process of looking for something that my flying partner and I could replace it with. I miss the Clipper because it was a blast to fly and I rebuilt it in my shop at home which seemed to create a bit of a bond with the aircraft! That being said, my flying partner didn't like it and didn't fly it so we agreed to sell it and find something that fit the bill a little better for him. Our partnership includes his 180 so we weren't without a flying bird in the meantime :D .

The search resulted in a lot of time spent on Barnstormers and the like, then making phone calls and asking questions, then discussing with each other whether or not to pursue a particular airplane. In the end I found where his heart lies and I couldn't be happier with the decision. We ended up with a Citabria 7GCAA. It's 150hp with low time on the engine and high time on the airframe (a retired power line patroller). It's a '79 but was completely rebuilt in 2007 down to the frame with factory new everything (wood, seats, interior, metalized wings installed at the factory, etc.). It was only on Barnstormer's for a week before we snagged it up!

So three of us headed south from Central Oregon down to Santa Ynez, CA (IZA) after our due diligence to pick it up. The location of the airplane was nice because I grew up down there and my family lives 20 minutes away so we stayed the night with them and had a great time. If you can believe it, we had a tailwind down and a tailwind back!! 177kts GS on the G430 on the way down at one point!! The route was S39-WLW-IZA and reverse for the trip home.

I'm still getting used to the airplane but it's really nice to fly and is quite a performer! Here are some pics.

Here's Paulina Peak with East Lake in the foreground and Paulina Lake in the back:

It's raining here so I'm on the computer and finally got around to making a little video of this trip. Sorry, more country/folk music. Enjoy!

That 180 looks familiar...
Any chance it was purchased from a fellow named Miles Drawhorn out of Redding CA?

Another great morning strip hopping up in the high country. P.R. Springs is at 8100' and it's narrow but you cant beat the views. I'm really liking this tailwheel thing.

It was purchased from Amy Hoover 8 or 10 years ago. Here's a picture on her website of what it looked like before the new paint job:

Not sure who had it before that.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Just a short hop over to meet the new neighbor, cowboy Pedro who's watching the cattle down from my place 1/2 mile or so. Guatamalan, been here for 30 yrs so his English is great, unlike the Peruvians who will be up here later in the year watching the sheep. All these guys are friendly though even when we can't communicate.Image Like all modern cowboys he has a cell phone, and we exchanged #'s so I am now available on short notice for looking for cattle. That makes me a honorary cowboy I guess.
In this shot my place is visible down the road on the left. After bs'ing with Pedro a bit I made a few other hillside landings and logged a total of .4 hrs. I like these short little local flights, WAY better then not flying at all.Image
