I had a crane job I could not get out (involving truckers, an excavator, and a couple other contractors who didn't want to hear "let's do it Monday".) that made me miss JC this year, but I did get a chance to fly over to Big Piney Wy and get a free breakfast and see a few classic cars at a fly in there. Unlike the rest of you, I don't have unlimited funds and leisure time (though I can fake it pretty good for extended periods) and sometimes ! just have to WORK. I had always wanted to land some of the ridges on the way there from my place, but was always in a hurry going somewhere else. This trip there was no somewhere else, as long as I got home in time for the afternoon crane job, so.....: this spot was at 9500', and note higher ridge in the background, more on that later.

I noticed the pattern altitude at Big Piney is 8,000', that tells you it's in Wyoming. A super nice Piet with an 0-200, flown by 79 year old Tom out of Lander, a great guy and inspiring as I can almost relate to being 79 nowadays!

So now, heading back after the obligatory BS'ing on the flight line and of course the free breakfast, I inadvertantly ended up passing over the higher ridge in the back of the first one I had landed earlier. One good thing about this heat wave is no wind, or very little anyway, so I ended up circling over it and next I knew:

The parking spot and start of the takeoff run, here's the view from the touchdown spot, some big rocks but unlike other times they wern't camo'd and were easy to avoid

: This may be a world record for an off airport landing altitude WITH a folding mountain bike on board

10,600' and 72 degrees and getting warmer by the minute. I figure the dens alt was 13,500' or so, and cheated on the takeoff using the slope I had landed on, and it was non eventful. Now I was running out of time, but as I headed home I flew over the even higher ridge in the back ground of this shot, and it has been eating at me, it is in the mental GPS for a future looksee.

Dodging a little virga right in my backyard, I set it down and was on the way to my crane job by 10:30 AM, and this job's money went directly toward my new carbon fiber extended wing tip mod so at least I got something to show for missing JC this year.
