Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Re: Where did you fly today?

I rarely post here, because phone pics usually looks very flat and unimpressive. These images are no better, but it was such a lovely day that I wanted to share anyway. I went out with no plan, but to fly around and look at mountain farms and possibly some spots to go hunting.

Landed at the closest airfield just to say hello. A bunch of gliders out that day, but totally forgot to take pictures. Was cool watching them being towed up!

Doesn't show, but a little further on the other side of that saddle, there is a valley with straight walls dropping down almost 2000 feet. It never gets boring powering off, getting slow, dropping full flaps and corkscrew down. Not easy or safe to take pictures at the same time I suppose, so you have to use your imagination. Maybe I can be bothered rigging up my GoPro.

Home airfield. It is 1800 feet long, and sits at about 240 feet elevation, and that wall in the background is 3000 feet tall. The airstrip itself is on the far side of the hangars. So it is alomst right next to the wall. But the valley is so deep that down here it is almost always calm. When we do get wind it always straight up or down the runway.

Beautiful scenery - and pictures!
I visited Norway many moons ago, but stayed at 0ft AGL, driving and hiking. Such a beautiful country!

Thanks for sharing!

Re: Where did you fly today?

I took my first trip into the LAX bravo to Hawthorne. Did it solo. Helpful controllers, mostly smooth ride over the mountains. The mountains between the Central Valley and the LA Basin are rugged, especially west of I-5 with few options for a forced landing. I followed I-5 to the Valencia area, then turned to intercept one of the VFR corridors. I felt like I had better options over the mountains than flying over that city.

The San Andreas fault is visible in this photo. It’s near the low bluff above the right to left trending road. The location is Lebec and Frazier Park.

Holy smokes! That wall is nothing shy of daunting, even if it's absolutely beautiful.

I went to Google Maps street view from the main highway and that mountain is even more spectacular next to the runway. It reminds me a little of when I landed at Banff many years ago. Keep posting your pictures!!!!

Thanks for the encouragement! Funny how something that is just a normal day flying can be amazing to others! Our mountains are nowhere as big as the one over in North America, so I sometimes don’t think it is sorth posting. But they can go from sea level and up to 6000 feet, so they can be impressive when you are eight next to then.

I really envy the amount of wilderness you guys have. I am having more and more trouble finding somewhere I can walk for a day or more without hitting a road, village, powerline or something. I don’t know if it possible to find anywhere you can’t see the yellowish glow on the horizon from the nearest city when it gets dark.

Wow, Squash and Varanger those are incredible. Squash is that Homer? I have two friends that have worked out of Homer over the past few years.
Me and Mrs Burns went out for some leaf peeping today. We are close to peak, but colors seem a bit subdued this year.

Yes. Alaska. This was taken along the Johnson River. That emerald lake is 8 NM ENE from the peak of Mt Iliamna. Photo was taken looking up at Iliamna. You can see it all from satellite images.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Nice photos, as usual! We are about the same here. Small lakes/ponds are skimmed over, bigger lakes still open. We have a short warmup coming, then back to cooler weather. Hopefully we will have good ice in a couple of weeks.
