Where the Porter gets in.............the porter gets out!

I love porters, we always said if there is something running out from under the dash, don't worry. Its not gas, its not oil, its testosterone.

Love 'em! Turned many wrenches on them and can't how many times I've jumped them. Love flying in them, only wish I could have one

Just quote his message and you can see the syntax he used to present the video inline.

Everyone has been trying to re-invent the airplane, and low and behold, it has been here all these years.

There's a gas powered for sale in Florida. Jump plane. The video is pretty astounding I think. Just goes to show that if you ad enough power and enough wing to the basics you get what you pay for.

How much does a smaller turbine like that weigh compared to say an O-550? Any idea on SHP for that turbine?

PT6-27
328lbs
550shp, derated from 620shp

IO-550
431lbs
300hp.
Quite a difference.

Re: Where the Porter gets in.............the porter gets out

The cool thing is that the spec weight on the new H4's is only 1000 lbs heavier than my 185. Now that is very impressive to me. We just bought one down in Ecuador that looks to be in awesome shape, as it was totally refurbished 5 years ago but hasn't flown since. It was owned by the Ecuadorian army and we need a good, easy to deal with, realistic DAR that is willing to go down and do a conformity inspection and a airworthyness. We are also looking for an experienced PC-6 mechanic that is willing to go down and get her in flying condition which won't take much. We will fly her hour on a ferry permit. Also we need an experienced PC-6 ferry pilot. If anyone know of anybody qualified please shoot me a message. I've got a few names in the hat but am still looking.

Seems not so long ago we were talking Tom Zudel's Cessna 180 in my hanger -- Many moons ago I was in a little southeastern Asia country where there were dozens of these Porters flying in and out daily . I bid on a PC-6 in Texas (EL Paso ) in early 70's that had torn off the main gear attempting a departure from a model airplane field. See you have a 185 now -like your brother-in law in Kansas . Have a DAR that could do the export -import to Clovis or ?. Great find but may or may not be able to go Civilian if it belonged to foreign government. They used to manufacturer the Fairchild Porter in I believe in New York recently could be a source of good parts/ information/pilots etc. Shoot me a email or call and we'll get you aimed in right direction .Bill Reid

Re: Where the Porter gets in.............the porter gets out

The Porter has some cool performance, but it has its downsides as well. It is slow, really slow, like geese do bird strikes on the trailing edges. It has no range only a couple of hundred miles. The stabilizer is covered in aluminum so thin, you have to re-skin them on a regular basis if you operate out of gravel strips. The final blow, it is made by Pilatus, a genuine bunch of millhouses. Everything in the parts manual, even AN & MS hardware has a secret Pilatus part number. There is a very closely guarded cross reference for getting around that, and one of my purchasing guys has access, but then he got it when he was with Continental Air (they where the ones in Laos running the Porters, not Air America (same parent company)).

Zymex tried running them in Southern Sudan, but even with the drop tanks they have pathetic range. So we used Soloy converted 207's to get Porter like short field performance without the lack of range or speed. Unfortunately the 207 with an Allison does not win a beauty contest, even in the roided out beast category like the Porter (we called it the fruit bat).

If your going to import one, you will have to do an original certification, unless it had a US airworthiness certificate issued before. It is more of a pain than a re-import or import of a US manufactured. You will need a certificate of airworthiness for export from Switzerland that conforms to US spec for import here. No amount of sympathy from a DAR will help. If the Porter was bought using US Government MAP funds, it may be seized by the US on import. All MAP funded projects must be given back to the US or have a release by the US to sell. They can trade, just not sell. I know a few people that have lost their aircraft on import due to this almost unknown rule.

Re: Where the Porter gets in.............the porter gets out

Ha, bird strikes on the trailing edges, that's funny, but probably not too far from the truth. Unfortunately there are no real STOL planes that go fast, They are so far apart on the performance spectrum that the two traits, Porter type STOL and speed do not mix.
The PC6 and the low wing PAC 750 X-STOL display incredible feats of takeoff and landing but slow cruise but then they are for very specific purposes. Then there is the Quest Kodiak, a compromise, but does not come anywhere near true Stol as the Porter. Only until someone develops wing morphing, will we have the best of both worlds.
