Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Which wingtips with Sportsman cuff?

Hello All! I’ve been a reader for a long time but just now joined the forum. I know there’s several topics out there mentioning all the STOL/wing mods but I havent had luck tracking down what I’m looking for.

I’m ordering up a Sportsman, wing-X and BLR VG kits for my ‘76 A185F (high lift wing) to be installed sometime in the new year. I currently have RMD wingtips with LED landing lights and a max pulse system. I’d like to keep those tips if possible as i like the added visibility but i don’t think they are compatible with the cuff. The Quasar CX look great but are pretty spendy and I’ll already be investing a fair bit. Wondering if there’s a way to keep the tips i have or if i have to start back at square one?

Thanks in advance for any advice

Re: Which wingtips with Sportsman cuff?

For years there were not wingtips available with the same leading edge as the sportsman cuff. To make do many installers, myself included, make make a short “fence” where the two items intercept. Sorry I don’t have a picture but we always though it looked pretty decent. I don’t believe there’s a problem legality wise as there’s no requirement in the STC to use any particular wingtip.

Another option is getting some sort of trade-in value from Stene for your current tips as you’re buying their cuff kit? Worth asking maybe.

You are going to love the mods. Since the WingX will have a Sportsman's cuff, get wingtips with the cuff as well- I know it hurts, been there done that, but you won't regret it. Talk with Willie Stene, tell him the lights you currently have, I'll bet he has tips that will work. He did for me and I had AeroLEDs.

You are gonna love the mods. Congrats!

And, I would bet that you could pretty easily sell those RMD tips. They are a very high quality piece of equipment.
