Call it Kiwi enginuity

I had that posted on my FB page yesterday, seem's to be a popular picture! I've already been told to design one for the Bearhawk...
But you'd have to think the drag they create is astronomical, I mean, streamlined v.s. rounded flying wires or spats can save you 2-3kts... 4 bikes must cost you 20-30 kts..??

Re: While trying to figure out how to cram my bikes into a M

I routinely put three bikes in my -170. To do it, I take the front tires off and fix the forks to a set of bike mounts that are mounted to a 2x6. I remove my rear seat and the bikes are in a vertical position. If I need lots of room for camping gear etc, I pull both tires off and lay the bikes flat. With my extended baggage compartment I can easily over gross well before I run out of room.

For your Maule, removing both tires will probably be most efficient. i would also condsider loosing your handle bar mounts and turning them parallel to your frame. Removing pedals can also save you lots of room and are easy to do. Wrap them in blankets to protect both your bikes and airplane.

Can someone help me cram a bike and 2 suitcases of PBR in my J3C?

That looks sketchy for a number of reasons. Bikes aren't hard enough to put together that I'd spend time attaching them to my wings. 15 minutes with a crescent to assemble a couple bikes.

I'd mount them wheels down in case you had to drop a wing in the flare. Plus they need some bushwheels to get more ground clearance.

Plus those mountain bikes almost universally now have quick release skewers - you don't even need a crescent wrench to remove both wheels. With a 5 or 6mm allen key, loosen the stem and rotate 90' for a pretty flat stack inside. But you won't get all 4 pax prolly.

Different solution perhaps. Montague folding bikes:

http://www.montaguebikes.com/

There were several threads on these bikes previously. Also some threads by folks that have hooked gas engines to them. I have been hunting diligently on Crags list for a number of months as they are pretty pricey for the technology & components that you get. If I get one, will let you know how it works.

I have gone through the process of getting my bike in and out of the 180 and it is doable, but looking forward to having the folding technology.

Re: While trying to figure out how to cram my bikes into a M

I've been flying with Montague bikes since, I believe, '95. I never go XC without it. I'm on my second one now and they hold up as well as any other bike, zero problems with the folding mechanism. About as game changing as GPS, for me anyway. For years I have been waiting for the real life emergency landing that leaves me stranded, but then I bike out, the Montague saves the day! In the meantime having the ability to get around sure beats pushing the weather on XC's, and a bike is preferable a lot of times over a car for checking a new area out. It also frees me up from having to only go places where a loaner car is available once I land. It is also pretty good off road, at least I've had mine way off pavement many times.

One of my favorite Montague pics, I took the bike on a breakfast run to Alpine Wyo., and the cafe I go to is a long damn walk but a short ride. I ended up not needing the bike as I realized once overhead there was a staging area for snow machines near the cafe that was also a great landing site. But at least I got this picture landing some slopes on the way back :o Image

Two thumbs up for Montagues. We have two of them, plus an older Fuji folder. They're nice riding full size bikes. I use my Paratrooper as a commuter. Because they're full size, they're still pretty big when folded. There's not a lot of room left over in the 206 once all 3 bikes are loaded, so a 2 week camping jaunt with 3 bikes calls for some serious compromises on what else comes along. I love bikes, but the truth is that they are kind of bizarre and awkward devices when it comes to packing. Must be because they have to fit humans. It's sure great having them to ride at the other end, though.

I think it would be a great idea for a designer to come up with a 2 place plane that perfectly fit 2 folding bicycles...how bout a Highlander? Would it fit? My J5 fits a folding bicycle nicely on the back seat but then no passenger :-/

That would not be legal in the lower 48, No? External loads verboten. I'd be surprised if other Countries would even allow it.
Imagine having those coming off over a busy metropolis. Some lucky people would be getting free bikes. or what's left of them.

looks to me to be entirely "un-sanitary". lots of drag and if the air should do something wierd one or both sides could rip off possibly hitting the horizontal. Even if the stabilizer wasn't damaged you would have lots of drag on the opposite side

They have, It's called a bigger plane.

I'm kind of a photoshop guy and all the stuff I can think of to look for (blurring, shadows, reflections...) seems legit. Examples: You can see the reflection of the bikes off the cowl. You can see the shadows of the bikes on the left wing underneath the fuselage.

Cessna 182, how I do it is , rear seat off the plane.
Front wheel off the bikes, seat off, and the 2 bikes fit nicely.
Before I had the extended baggage compartment I had to remove rear wheel too.

Re: While trying to figure out how to cram my bikes into a M

I've got a Tern C7 right now, and it folds up almost as small as a Brompton. (at 1/3 the price:)
Put some miles on it, and far and away the best folder I've owned. Easy to ride some distance, solid.
I'm working with a baggage area the size of a jeans pocket. http://www.ternbicycles.com/bikes/link-c7

But rilly, most foldies are Junk. Bickertons, Stridas, assorted Dahon and cruddier off brands...
