Will an aileron fit inside a C180/185/182 etc?

Anybody have any experience transporting an aileron in the above aircraft? Rear and pax seats removed. Also, I assume I'd have to temporarily remove the door or swing the window up to get it in. The aileron is 9 ft long and the front of the door to the aft end of the extended baggage is 9 ft. I have a spare aileron I want to get skinned and of the choices of flying for 2.5 hrs one way, driving for 7.5 hrs each way, or $300 freight (+/- damage), I'd much prefer to fly. Thanks!

I bet it will fit especially with extended baggage. I once carried a Sportsman Stol kit still in the wooden box that was almost 8 feet long I think. I removed the rear seat, co pilots seat, and door to get it in the airplane.

Excellent! The best would be if I could snake it thru the window as it's less work, but I will have to get out the bubble wrap and give it a try.

You need to get some pins for the doors! It takes me 3 seconds to take a door off.

I've loaded 8'-11" material into a C-170B with extended baggage. That's with door removed. May have removed copilot seat for loading as well- I forget.

There's a few options out there.

You can buy these for $31.50 each:
http://www.fadodge.com/door-hinge-pin-large-ss/

Or you can buy a 10 pack of these for $6.79:
http://m.homedepot.com/p/The-Hillman-Gr ... /204726290 I had these on my 170 and they worked great.

Got my pins from OSH Aircraft Supply.

Do you have the usual 180 baggage door?
Have inserted some long parts starting from the rear.

Almost bi-monthly trips from Ried Hillview to Ukiah.
Carried most of those parts in my "Utility" interior 170B. no Px. front Seat.
Folding Px. rear seat. LOTS of Bungie Chords. Again with Utility interior,
You can run the parts up to the rudder pedal tunnel.

Check my ol For Sale photos.

Best for now

I took the right door off my 180 and slid a 12D40 prop into it. Atlee Dodge seats and extended baggage.... left the front seat in... that prop is 9.08' long. It is a heavy prop and unwieldy. An Aileron might fit as well.

Barely, but we put skis in all the time with one seat down and still but passengers in the back. They are 6' so the aileron might be your co-pilot but I think it's possible.

I've heard that a 12' roll of carpet will fit in a C180 with the bulkhead pulled. Of course you wouldn't want to fly it that way. [emoji6]

It should work. The longest item I've carried is a DC-8 aileron trim tab(surplus part, destined to become part of a bar). 10'X1'

Yes, the door will have to come off

I'm not a mechanic, but I'm pretty sure the ailerons go on the outside of the plane.

Good news! The aileron fits easily in the airplane without the passenger seat and with taking the door off. Bad news-the Atlee Dodge "1/8 inch" pins actually measure .130" and don't fit. The stock pins measure .122" and are fairly tight. To use the AD pins, I'll need to pull the front kick panel, remove the airframe side of the hinges, ream, and reinstall.

Atlee Dodge actually lists two sizes of Cessna hinge pins, large (1/8" ) and small (3/32").
Guess you need the smalls.

Re: Will an aileron fit inside a C180/185/182 etc?

3/32" would be .0938" which would probably be too loose, as the existing pins are about .122". I'll wait until I have the kick panel off for something else, then ream the airframe hinge holes. It's not that big a deal to remove the stock pins, anyway.
