Windshield Scratch Repair

As the days are getting shorter up here in the Maine, I find my self dealing with more low light conditions, and staring into sun through the windshield. Like many people with older planes I have a good deal of scratches in the windshield, and when looking into the sun, it makes the visibility very low and some times unsafe on short final. Wondering if any one has tried to repair the scratches by polishing or any other method, or is the only solution to replace the windshield with a new one.

Re: Windshield Scratch Repair

Polished a few windshields that were scratched, and one that had turned yellow and I sanded the yellow off with 600 grit sandpaper wrapped around a sponge. I use a power buffer and Novus brand scratch remover/polish it comes in 3-steps, works fine.

Re: Windshield Scratch Repair

So on the subject of windshield care & feeding is it better to cover it from the elements and run the risk of abrasion from grit etc under the covering or use an internal heat shield and leave the windshield uncovered, inquiring minds may want to know !!!

Re: Windshield Scratch Repair

Crest toothpaste and a buffer with a fine pad. It'll look new when you're done. Polish it with a good uv protectant when you're done.

This stuff works well:
