Wing cuffing, how big a speed hit

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Wing cuffing, how big a speed hit

Not that 180/182’s are ever guilty of being speed demons but if I add VG’s and say a sportsman cuff how big a speed hit to cruise has anyone noticed?

I have a 1956 182. I installed a sportsman and noticed zero change accept a slower stall speed. No VG's

Re: Wing cuffing, how big a speed hit

I’ve flown a couple Cessnas before and after adding the Sportsman cuff. If there is a speed decrease, it’s so small as to be virtually impossible to measure.

I’m not a fan of VGs on Cessna wing, with or without the Sportsman.

I LOVE the Sportsman cuff, however.

Exactly. If it slows you down it is equivalent to two big bugs on your windscreen

Re: Wing cuffing, how big a speed hit

I have installed two sportsman cuffs on Cessnas and made efforts to quantify the effects. No detectable speed loss on either. The only down side is additional cost and weight.

Re: Wing cuffing, how big a speed hit

I was wondering about the weight. I always thought you remove the current leading edge and add the new one but recently I saw pictures of somebody doing the sportsman and they just put it over the existing leading edge. Can you do either or?

No, you can't remover the stock cessna leading edge. The STOL kit does not go as far back as the stick leading edge.

Re: Wing cuffing, how big a speed hit

Ive noticed a decrease in the top speed of the down hill run on a lightly loaded 182. Ive seen an increase in cruise speed on heavily loaded Naturally asperated 206s. This is all Sportsman experience.

Gotcha, do you happen to know how big a weight hit is it?

I copied this from the Stene website.....Q&A

6. Upon installation what is the change in weight & balance? The kit adds 15 pounds at 22".

Re: Wing cuffing, how big a speed hit

I gained a solid 3kts airspeed with the addition of the Sportsman Stol kit on my PPonk1976 180. The installation consisted of removing the already there Micro VG,s. Install the Sportsman cuff and reinstalling the VG,s. I did not fly the airplane with just the Sportsman.

MTV, Can I get more insight on this. Considering adding VG's to a 182p with stock (lesser) cuffed airfoil.

See my explanation on your other thread you posted.

Short answer: Unless the person who reports "magic" stall speed reductions on a Cessna wing has developed ACCURATE data, based on flight using a flight test certificated airspeed boom and accurately calibrated and tested A/S indicator, that data is VERY suspect, and probably just marketing hype.

My understanding of the certification regs for VGs is that the manufacturer essentially documents data to the FAA that they create no negative or adverse aerodynamic effects. No requirement for them to document improvements in performance. Some may, others may not.
