Wiring Diagram

Assembling my 1956 180 S/N 32190 after rebuild. Have new instrument panel and looking to install new switches and wiring. Looking for information on diagram. The parts and service catalogs I have don't cover this. There are no wire sizes or routings for the airplane in general. The old panel has the CB bus bar and original switches, accompanied with a ton of dirty frayed old wires and friction tape. I am installing EI engine instruments and will have an avionics bus with separate master switch. Also, moved battery to firewall and replaced generator with alternator. All the exterior and panel lighting (Nulites with dimmer) are LED. Willie's wingtips w/LED.
Neighbor wired his RV in a nice way but my IA says I have to use a published appropriate wiring diagram. Looking for something for that and for proper wire sizes.
Appreciate any suggestions.

All the original schematics are in the back of the service manual for those early cessnas. Use Mil-Spec tefzel wire and klixon breakers with reference to the electrical section of AC43-13-2A and you’ll be doing it just like most of the big avionics shops.

Have fun!

Re: Wiring Diagram

We did a total rewire on my 1954 180 in 2016. As I recall the wire sizing was a mix and match of sources. For instance each Ei instrument has a schematic that specifies amperage and I think even wire size. There are also tons of amp/gauge charts on the net. Some was replace in kind. We also used crimped and soldered connections with shrink wrap and labels. The labels were a huge help. It’s a daunting project but taken in its component pieces it becomes very manageable.

Re: Wiring Diagram

Wiring diagram is located in the 100-series AMM. You are correct that the early 100-series WDM does not give you lengths and AWGs. However, the later 100-series AMM does provide this detail. The AMMs are available online as PDFs.

Any published wiring diagram for your aircraft will not cover the changes you are talking about.

Your IA is correct that need approved.
That approved data is AC 43.13-2B

You will also likely have approved data accompanying each new instrument you're installing that will give any specific guidance needed.
