Re: World's lightest folding bike

A couple of additions...

When I reach the bottom of my hill, am doing 20-25 mph; plenty fast given that I have to stop at a STOP sign. Not looking for much more speed than this.

Have ridden light dirt bikes in my mid-spent youth with several wipeouts; been there, done that no need to repeat.

Best,

Tommy

Ok, I pulled the trigger on the Rohloff and new 4 bolt hole brake disks.

Not clear if I have to buy the OEM2 axle plate along with the 160 mm MonkeyBone or whether it is part of the Rohloff?

Next, choosing the Luna package...

Thanks,

Tom

Re: World's lightest folding bike

I am a big fan of Bike Friday (made in Oregon) and their Pakit models.

To this point, I've used it for my airline life, but with that said, I feel the points that make it a great layover bike are relevant to general aviation.

The BF Pakit is relatively light, and folds up pretty compactly. I hang the folded bike on my 22" roll-along luggage. It goes through a TSA scanner. I can put it in the 737 coat closet, or even in the overhead bin.
Best of all, it was custom ordered, and uses universal bike parts. The Brompton, on the other hand, weighed about 5lbs more, and was $500 more for a similar configuration. The Brompton also uses proprietary parts.

The Pakit is also available in a e-bike configuration.

I currently fly a Lake Buccaneer for fun,and rear seat / cargo access is not great. This folder works for the Lake too, because I can lift it up and into the back seat without too much of an issue.

Yeah, Rohloff makes you buy their proprietary 4 bolt brake disc, (German engineering/marketing) and since it's 160mm, you will need a 160mm "Monkey Bone" . Here's one (but 180 mm, all I could find quickly, 160's are readily available also) https://www.bike-discount.de/en/buy/roh ... JmEALw_wcB That round lug on the right side, where it's machined down, is where the "OEM 2" torque plate will engage, as the hub needs something to torque against. Much simpler in practice then to explain #-o

Re: World's lightest folding bike

Thanks for the info. Luna is out of the BBSHD kit in my size so I ordered elsewhere but the vendor has a PayPal problem. We’ll see. Luna is also out of the 52V Mighty Mini (and charger) that I intend to use as my 1st battery. Will try to assemble all and power with an adjustable power supply for testing. By then, hope Luna will have Mighty Mini in stock. The adventure begins...

Re: World's lightest folding bike

Typical of the growing pains LUNA is experiencing, they are a victim of their own success, and are also dealing with their own supplier issues. I'm waiting on another battery charger now myself.

Being a longtime kitplane builder, I see many parallels to that "industry": a small hobby business formed by enthusiasts, mom and pop types, or in LUNA's case, guy and girlfriend (a much younger girlfriend....) that explodes into a real live big time business that gets all involved scrambling to keep up! In the 3 years or so I've been using them they have made major strides, but hey, they'll never reach the Walmart level of pro business dealings, so be patient and be assured they are head and shoulders above other suppliers in the ebike biz when push comes to shove.
