You can only have one...

Planes are like cars. There's not one that could fit all the needs. Well maybe, but in this case you could only pick one. Both are extremely capable. The big Doge truck or the Toyota Tundra?

Purely Curious. I love them both

Re: You can only have one...

We're both these plans at Oshkosh last week? I didn't go down to the show but live in the north shore of Lake Winnebago and thought I saw you flying north/northeast over my place headed towards Green Bay/Door County?

Either way, both are too speedy for my budget but they really look like fun.

Re: You can only have one...

Hmmm....

Probably the one that is least like the 180?

I mean I'm assuming your are keeping the 180 either way. The one of these that doesn't overlap the 180, so that you can cover as much flying diversity as possible. The 180 is pretty fast, can carry a lot etc. And even though it's obviously pretty STOL capable, I'm assuming a light carbon cub with big power and a slow cruise speed is going to use quite a bit less ground roll - at the cost of speed and load capability. I mean if you could only have 1 of the 3 mentioned, the back country rev 2 would be the bird as it does everything pretty well, but with having the 180, it seems you could kind of go the "opposite way" in a sense. Speaking of sense, hope this paragraph made some. If I had your tricked out 180, I would want the other bird to be something light, fuel efficient, nimble, super STOL, simple etc. Just some thoughts... the one you have now is pretty sweet obviously!!

I figured the rev 2 with slats doesn't need much ground roll, how does it compare to a CC??

Re: You can only have one...

CC smokes it in speed, fuel and can carry. Love my Rev2 but it's gotta go. It overlaps the 180. The new CC is going to be under a 1000lbs on 35's, cruise at 130 on 35's and burn 6-8g an hour and be 200hp. No joke

The Rev2 can haul the mail! It just doesn't fit my mission is all. I'm really torn as I truly love my bird and Backcountry makes an incredible aircraft. I'm just going a different direction.

The Rev2 is listed on Barnstormer's and will make someone one heck of a bird.

Love your posts,Kevin and I know from them, that you will end up doing ok with your decision .
If I had you buck80 , would probably go with a 85hp cub to just putter around.
I do like the CC planes, and have thought of building one myself.

Re: You can only have one...

For about the same number of months, at different times, I owned two airplanes, and two houses. Owning two airplanes was a MUCH bigger pain in the ass. I don't think it matters which airplane you pick, so long as you get rid of the other one as soon as possible.

Re: You can only have one...

For me personally it would be the rev 2 without blinking an eye lid BUT i dont have a 180 so a rev 2 would not be coming close to overlapping with what I already have. A carbon cub on the other hand would be.

Im also a huge fan of the hiding a rev 2 will take, not sure a carbon cub would take the same punishment. This said, id like to think a carbon cub would however take as much punishment as Id ever find a plane requiring!

I rekon while the rev 2 would be my choice, I think given your 180 and what your doing. Youve well and truly made the right choice

I thought the same thing last week when I saw your plane at Oshkosh, Kevin.

Loved the bird, but agree with your assessment. Being a 180 driver as well, I am looking at building a EX3 CC or something similar in order to fill out the corners in my mission envelopes.

Re: You can only have one...

The CC, IMO, makes a much better match with a 180. The Rev2 is obviously an awesome aircraft, but for pure, lightweight, flying joy, I don't think a guy can beat the new Carbon Cubs.

I'd really love to see 130 mph indicated on 35" Bushwheels; that's seriously impressive!

It was funny watching your live stream the other day. The careful listener could hear your heart breaking at the thought of selling your existing ride!

Re: You can only have one...

I would stick with the REV 2. I think it is better matched to your flying. You can always do an engine swap and add more HP. The beauty of it being experimental is that you can tweak other things too. I think it's a sweet, tough as nails plane.

My $.02.

That is an impressive speed number on 35s. Has that been demonstrated or computer generated? Is that speed ok for 2-3 hours or limited to 5-10 minutes?

Very impressive.

Which model is that Kevin? That's moving right along! I've only flown with a CC once and he was a little slower than me (I usually indicate around 100mph at 8500+ that we were flying at in the moutain valleys). I don't know exactly which one he had, obviously not the new spring gear version, I think a pretty standard 180hp CC?

Re: You can only have one...

For me, it's a no brainer. The 180 is the most versitile. I think the rans , functionally is pretty similar to most of the super cubs. I love my rans, and have more fun with it, but the 180 is plenty capable. i call the rans a short leash plane. Most of my flying with it is within 150 mi. of home. I like to travel, and can go anywhere with the 180. If I could only have 1 plane, the 180 is it, if I could have a second plane, the super cub or rans fits that bill.
At some point i'll drop back to 1 plane, and that will be a tough decision, but at this point I'm hopin to get my travelin out of the way and just stay on a short leash with the rans.

Re: You can only have one...

Cory Robin and his CC EX on 35's does 125/130 mph all day long on 35's. It was actually a running joke to and from Oshkosh as he was flying circles around me. The other 3 Cubs with us were doing the same.

The other running joke was how much is your gas bill at this stop.

Don't get me wrong, I love my cub but it's time for me to go a different route. I just don't need the heavy load hauler. My cub carries the same as my 180. 1200lbs.

My new Carbon Cub will be just as Slow, faster and weigh 450 plus lbs less. It's a no brainer for me.

Any moose or elk hunters out there? How about an elephant? My Rev2 will haul it.

It's listed on Barnstormer's. I start my Cub Crafters build on Monday. In 6 days!

Congrats on soon to be new airplane.

What are the specs for your new CC. Are you doing a factory assist build? I hope you post a bunch so we can follow along.

Re: You can only have one...

I'm still trying to wrap my brain around those speeds on 35s. I think once I heard CC has the restrictions for LSA ????? Even there web site says 96 mph. I sure that's not on 35s. This might be and old model. Heck with that kind of speed I'd even look at one. Image

Re: You can only have one...

Keep in mind, there are several models of Carbon Cubs. So to lump them all into one airplane/performance model would not do the diversity in the models justice.

Mine is a homebuilt EX model and is not LSA.

Here's a live video I did of us playing on the way home from Oshkosh... I show my panel, power settings, airspeed, etc during the video..

35's + my CC(EX) = Legit...
