I'm new to this site so I only just found this thread. I'm disappointed to see that no-one has responded, so I'll see if I can revive the subject and we can get some useful pointers. I've found the iPhone and iPad to be invaluable in the cockpit and the apps seem to get better in choice and quality.
For a long time, I was on a quest for a simple, backup horizon, in case my vacuum pump failed. Once the iPhone 4 came out, with a gyro, it seemed a no-brainer that an app would be out sooner or later. And sure enough, a few apps came out claiming to be an attitude indicator. Problem is, I tried them and they were so bad they were useless. I had all but given up when I found a thread on another site mentioning an app called PocketHorizon, that came out earlier this year. I read the info on the website - very comprehensive - and decided it was worth a try, especially as I already had an external GPS. I've been impressed with how well it works; some slight wobbling every now and again if the GPS signal isn't strong, but certainly good enough as a standby artificial horizon and it follows my AI very precisely, even in turbulence. It looks nice, too. I hope there will be some more apps from this developer, as they obviously know what they're doing.
Another app that's worth paying for rather than going for one of the free or ultra-cheap versions is Aviation W&B calculator. I've learned the hard way that if you pay next to nothing, you get nothing. Both this app and PocketHorizon are less than $10, so we're not talking big money here. They are both worth every penny.
