Your Favorite iPhone/Ipad App

Good day All,

I did a search and did find some threads on some of the iPhone apps that people enjoy or find very usefull. I was wondering if we could use this thread to make a quick summary of the iphone/ipad apps that you like with a quick description about it. Of course any "aviation" or "backcountry" applicable apps (flight planning, W & B, weather, maps, etc.) is what would mainly be helpful, but if someone really has some special app that they use that is outrageously great....by all means!

Cheers

Re: Your Favorite iPhone/Ipad App

I'm new to this site so I only just found this thread. I'm disappointed to see that no-one has responded, so I'll see if I can revive the subject and we can get some useful pointers. I've found the iPhone and iPad to be invaluable in the cockpit and the apps seem to get better in choice and quality.

For a long time, I was on a quest for a simple, backup horizon, in case my vacuum pump failed. Once the iPhone 4 came out, with a gyro, it seemed a no-brainer that an app would be out sooner or later. And sure enough, a few apps came out claiming to be an attitude indicator. Problem is, I tried them and they were so bad they were useless. I had all but given up when I found a thread on another site mentioning an app called PocketHorizon, that came out earlier this year. I read the info on the website - very comprehensive - and decided it was worth a try, especially as I already had an external GPS. I've been impressed with how well it works; some slight wobbling every now and again if the GPS signal isn't strong, but certainly good enough as a standby artificial horizon and it follows my AI very precisely, even in turbulence. It looks nice, too. I hope there will be some more apps from this developer, as they obviously know what they're doing.

Another app that's worth paying for rather than going for one of the free or ultra-cheap versions is Aviation W&B calculator. I've learned the hard way that if you pay next to nothing, you get nothing. Both this app and PocketHorizon are less than $10, so we're not talking big money here. They are both worth every penny.

Your Favorite iPhone/Ipad App

There's a much more comprehensive thread on this here somewhere. Here are some better search results to pore over:

Re: Your Favorite iPhone/Ipad App

Did anyone see this iPhone/iPad app that's been in the news?

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/arport/i ... ?ls=1&mt=8

It's called ARPort, and it's like a mini heads-up display that shows landmarks or navigational references on the "synthetic vision" view. Pretty cool idea. Reviews are mixed.

Using the free one. Not sure what the pay version gets, other than doing away with the tiny advertising banner ads on the free version. I get everything I want from the free app, myself, but I've not explored the pay app.

But, the free version is excellent, in my opinion.

Press both (Calb) buttons together and the resets the attitude.

I haven't figured how to Calb the altimeter yet though.

I also use (free) aeroweather and paid Garmin app.

Z: I noticed that you used the Google search engine rather than the BCP search engine to look for previous threads on this topic (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ip ... _yGk&mvs=0). Is this the better way to search topics on the BCP site?
