Zane - I want my Chili's coupon back

Dear Zane,

After I posted and received the page of "you post is being processed... please wait" a Chili's coupon ad popped up. By the time I could click on it my post was processed which took me to the original thread and a new ad popped up. Zane, please tell adsense I want my Chili's coupon.

Thanks much,
Matt

Wow, this truly is like the concept of a butterfly flapping its wings in Sierra Leone, and a hurricane starting in the Bahamas.

I have noticed that the ads are somewhat tailored to me. I keep seeing puffy jackets and skis, and a book for dummies.

You must shop at Payless Footwear too.

If anyone finds my Chili's coupon, will you PM it to me.

Thanks much,
Matt

Re: Zane - I want my Chili's coupon back

Well, the reason I see ones that are tailored to me is that Google Ads are aware of your cookies. They see that I've visited backcountry.com and other ski sites, and also that we are talking aviation here, and they deliver a mix of ads that should be targeted to you, the consumer. The ads you see are likely tailored to your surfing history a little as well, so if you are playing WoW, or catching up on Desperate Housewives, you might see some ads that reflect that.

What they do not do is store any of the information about you. It's all figured out realtime.

I have never played nor ventured to the WoW website, and I do know how adsense works. Put them, or tried to put them on my Dad's site. I just thought it was funny that I saw that one.

Ok, maybe that was a hail mary on their part then. :)

Last year I walked around fly-ins with Outback Steakhouse free steak dinner gift cards... but it involved an aircraft owner taking me up on a bet with regard to one of their aircraft's flight controls. Nobody ever won the bet outright, so I gave the gift card to them as part of the sale

Ads are personalized to the person, or more accurately, to the computer. Do a search for a product, that info is sold on an ad exchange. Sometimes even purchase info is captured and sold.

Clearing the browser history, cookies, etc. will usually clear the tracking.

I want to know what Yellowbelly was searching so I can get those ads (see Rob's rant about banner ads). [-o<

Guns, Motorcycles, Airplanes, and knitting supplies are the ones I see. Must be my new "tactical knitting" hobby.
Have you thought of offering forum sponsorship by aviaton businesses? Or is there not the demand for advertising as in other industries? The Jeep forum I am on , as well as sites like http://www.expeditionportal.com (the 4 wheeled equivalent to BCP) there are site "sponsors" who have banners on the site and certain privleges in posting advertisments.

Yes, and I will solicit those when I have something worth offering an advertiser. And they will be appropriate and fit in nicely. The site in its current state is just...embarrassing from a features standpoint. There's nothing here to offer, except...us and our smartass comments. :)

All in good time. Currently just holding down the fort at my day job, only making time to get some cool apparel for you guys.

When I get my Rotax overhaul shop, or whatever aviation business I end up doing in the next year, I will certainly be a sponsor.

So if the ads are targeted why don't I get ones with girls in burkas?

Just curious... If you do get advertisers on here, will you start moderating posts if someone has something negative to say about an advertisers product? Every forum I have been on in all fields of intersts I have from RC planes, to snowmachines to full scale planes seems like once the choise was made to take advertisers money the openess of the site took an immediate down turn. If someone posted something bad about a product the advertiser would bitch to the site owner saying they should not have to pay money to a site that allows them to be bad mouthed (or in most cases just having the truth told about them). I would MUCH rather see a site where members can pay at various levels to become "contributing members" if they so desire. You would be surprised how many will pony up.

Re: Zane - I want my Chili's coupon back

I don't need any money from BCP. However, my time is valuable. I spend my days making some really, really cool stuff for people who pay a lot of money for it, and I'd like to allocate some of that time to BCP to make it what I've envisioned. A few of the tasks involved with migrating our existing data to the new site are not trivial. I'll be hiring a monkey to help out.

The reason I started this site was to create something totally free from the sense of obligation to "buy a membership" that is found on so many other sites, and frankly I don't want the pressure from "shareholders." Paid memberships would only come about as an answer to the vetted privacy issues we suffer from. One can reasonably assume that anyone willing to drop a not-trivial amount of money on a membership could be trusted to see photos and videos and stories not sharable on the open Internet.

It can be a delicate dance when you take money from anyone, whether advertisers or individuals. The return on investment and responsibilities on each party must be well defined from the beginning. I would not enter into any partnership that required me to censor relevant opinions. If you're just bitching about politics or being an asshole... well all bets are off. :) But thanks anyway for the concerns about my integrity.

Rest assured that BCP is probably one of my most valued creations and every decision I make is in the best interest of maintaining the cool community that we have.
