S45 Siletz Bay State, and SIletz Bay, the spit is where the river hits the ocean. Gleneden Beach for the golf course is right there.

(3) days until Winter! Unless you’re a bloke down under in the Southern Hemisphere, it’ is Summer.

Following video is a typical Winter fishing trip on the Westside of Oahu:

Re: (3) days until the longest night (solstice) N. Hemispher

I understand there's the official calendar dates of winter, but the fact that it's -36 here today and that the length of day is shorter than my lunch break, doesn't exactly say Fall.

Anyway, Happy Solstice.

Re: (3) days until the longest night (solstice) N. Hemispher

TV news weather people came up with a new one to me-- "atmospheric winter" which started dec 1.
I believe the solstice is the start of the "meteorological winter".

Commonly accepted definitions—

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meteorology

Meteorology is the scientific study of the Earth's atmosphere and short-term atmospheric phenomena (i.e., weather), with a focus on weather forecasting.[1] It has applications in the military, aviation, energy production, transport, agriculture, construction, weather warnings, and disaster management.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celestial_navigation

Celestial navigation, also known as astronavigation, is the practice of position fixing using stars and other celestial bodies that enables a navigator to accurately determine their actual current physical position in space or on the surface of the Earth without relying solely on estimated positional calculations, commonly known as dead reckoning. Celestial navigation is performed without using satellite navigation or other similar modern electronic or digital positioning means.

Celestial observations typically don’t refer to weather. However, there are folks that cross pollinate celestial terms with meteorological terms. Solstice refers to the physical location the earth is in the solar system.

The terms I’m familiar with are:

If the ship is North of the Equator —

Summer Solstice: Sun declination 23.44 degrees North
Equinox: Sun declination 00.00 degrees (equator)
Winter Solstice: Sun declination 23.44 degrees South

If the ship is South of the Equator —

Summer Solstice: Sun declination 23.44 degrees South
Equinox: Sun declination 00.00 degrees (equator)
Winter Solstice: Sun declination 23.44 degrees North

Carry on men…

21.5 HO
-23.44 Sun Dec
= 44.60 LAT

Question:

Is my aircraft parked at?

1) Coos Bay

2) Bend Oregon

3) Toledo State

That’s correct! I’m glad to see there are a few hardcore navigators still around!

Good work.

Re: zero days until the longest night (solstice) N. Hemisphe

Looks like South Beach State Park to me. Were you on the beach when you took your sun sight? Here I am taking a noon sight on a Cal 40 sailing back to Seattle from Lahaina after the Vic/Maui race. I sold all of my boats, but I still have my Tamaya sextant. It is as much a work of art as it is a navigational tool.

That’s back in the day when the men were separated from the boys! That took guts. Fantastic!

Yes, I was very close to South Beach. You earned an A+, good work!

This is my primary sextant, Astra III. NASA purchased a few of these for the ISS and have been used for navigation practice in orbit.
